While the Hong Kong public is deeply saddened by the loss of lives and devastating destruction the 2011 Tohoku-Pacific Earthquake in Japan has caused, our community is greatly impressed by the courageous, orderly and mutually supportive spirit in which the Japanese communities are coping with the post-disaster rescue and relief efforts. The response of the international community, including China, to show solidarity and assist in the rescue has been immediate and strong.

In the same spirit, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, together with the Centre for Governance and Citizenship (CGC) of The Hong Kong Institute of Education, the Global Studies Institute in Hong Kong; and Master of Social Science in Global Political Economy (MGPE) Programme of The Chinese University of Hong Kong will jointly organize a public forum on "Crisis Management in the Miyazaki Earthquake and Fukushima Nuclear Plants Incident in Japan," to be conducted by Mr. Sebastien C. K. FUNG, Demonstrator of Department of Politics and Public Administration of The University of Hong Kong, on 1st April 2011 (Friday), 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Institute’s Reception (A-G/F-08), HKIEd (10 Lo Ping Road, Tai Po).

Mr. Fung read political science at Kyoto University on the Japanese Government (Monbushō) Scholarship and received his LLB in 1994. He then obtained an M.Phil. in international relations from the University of Cambridge in the following year. Between 2003 and 2005, he received the Japanese Government (Monkashō) Scholarship for conducting fieldwork for his doctoral thesis and was an affiliated member of the Faulty of Law of Tokyo University. His teaching and research interests include international relations of East Asia, Sino-Japanese relations, and politics and foreign policy of Japan.
