A professional development workshop on “Designing effective lessons by adopting Variation Theory as its guiding principle” conducted by Professor KO Po Yuk & Dr LAI Meng Choo for the teachers of Tin Ka Ping Secondary School was held on 1 February 2023.
The workshop comprised of 3 parts. The first part was the sharing of effective classroom cultures of different regions. The theories of Learning Study illustrated with examples of different subjects were introduced in the second part. How Variation Theory could be applied in designing learning activities to enhance the learning & teaching effectiveness as well as students’ higher order thinking skills were also discussed. In the third part of the workshop, the teachers worked in groups according to the subjects taught to select an object of learning (a topic) and identify its critical features. The purpose of the activity was to provide the teachers an opportunity to experience how to put the theory into practice.
