Mr Tang Kon Ming, tutor of Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, the Education University of Hong Kong, has offered consultancy support service for the subject of Mathematics at the level of Primary 3 of Yan Tak Catholic Primary School in the year of 2019-2020.To develop self-directed learning in students, the school has selected the topic of parallelograms to achieve the following objectives: 1) A smooth transition from the prior knowledge (parallel lines) to the new topic ‘parallelograms’; 2) Helping students discover the characteristics of parallelograms through strengthening classroom interaction; 3) Offering opportunities for students to reflect on what they have learned during the lesson and to complete the extended learning task for knowledge transfer. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 epidemic, the co-designed lesson could only be conducted online. Before the implementation of the lesson, Mr. Tang had demonstrated a lesson while all the Mathematics teachers of the school acted as Primary 5 students so that the teachers could experience how a self-directed learning lesson would be conducted.
