Speaker 1: Prof Leung Bo Wah Professor and Head of CCA

Topic: Design and implement a solid research project - Using my General Research Fund project as an example

Abstract: Designing a research project on a large scale is a critical task for researchers in the current context when researchers are required to apply for competitive research grants. Successful applications of the grants may help the researcher in building an international and local prestige in the specific area of research. This presentation illustrates how I designed a research project which was submitted to apply for the General Research Fund (GRF) grant by the University Grant Council. The GRF is one of the highly competitive research grants offered to all academics of the eight government-funded universities in Hong Kong. Various considerations will be shared with the participants on how to determine the topic, draft the proposal, implement the project, collect and analyse the data, present the findings in conferences, write journal articles for publications, and maximize the impact of the study.

 

Speaker 2: Dr MATSUNOBU Koji Assistant Professor and Associate Head of CCA

Topic: Designing educational instruments using 3D printing/fabrication technologies

Abstract: The use of computer-aided design (CAD) software and 3D printers enables flexible designing, easy replication, and low-cost production of musical instruments. Today, musicians can create tailor-made instruments and/or customize their instruments using 3D printers. How can music educators use these technologies and enhance their music education process? The goal of this project was twofold: (1) to design educational musical instruments using 3D technologies, and (2) to examine its usability and applicability in the classroom context. More specifically, I worked on vertical flutes (e.g., dong xiao, tanso, quena, shakuhachi). These flutes are difficult to play: Beginning students often give up the instruments before they can play a note. The lack of accessible instruments that enable authentic music-making has been a major problem in teaching and learning of traditional music especially in school settings. In this paper, I will share the processes and results of designing educational instruments, especially the case of shakuhachi (尺八). The research included interviewing professional shakuhachi makers and determining design parameters. Several prototypes were created and tested. The data drawn from 300 students confirmed that an invented type increases the success rate of sound production by over 60 percent (p<.001) and students' motivation and sense of self-efficacy. My experience of inventing and testing prototypes, applying for a patent, and marketing in the professional community will be shared.

 

Speaker 3: Dr CHENG Lee Assistant Professor of CCA

Topic: Creative practice, digital musicianship and ensembleship in a laptop orchestra

Abstract: The laptop orchestra is a platform that has recently been made possible by the advancement in mobile and computer technology, which enables individuals to make music collaboratively with laptop and mobile devices as musical instruments. Because of the interdisciplinary nature and the affordance of the music-making technology, new musical practices and digitally oriented musical competency were developed that differ from that of the conventional music ensembles such as orchestra and band. This presentation showcases the creative practices as well as the development of digital musicianship and ensembleship in EdUHK iLOrk (www.ilork.com), a laptop orchestra affiliated to this department as a co-curricular activity in our music undergraduate programmes.

 

Speaker 4: Dr CHEN Chi Wai Jason Assistant Professor of CCA

Topic: Mobile composing - Professional practices and impact on students’ motivation in popular music

Abstract: This pilot study focuses on the use of mobile tablets to allow secondary students to compose in class with the application GarageBand. The empirical research has two aims: to demonstrate the possibility of using mobile tablets as a composing device, and to examine professional practices for using mobile technologies in music learning. A 12-week e-learning curriculum was specially designed for students to learn to use mobile tablets to compose popular music. A total of 159 secondary school students participated in the study and responded to a set of pre- and post-activity questionnaires, modelled on items developed for a motivational study by McPherson and O’Neill (2010). The paired sample t-test compared the mean score changes in the dimensions of intrinsic value, attainment value, utility value, perceived cost and expectancy in motivation. Furthermore, one-way analysis of variance compared the mean scores for scale questions on learning motivation between groups based on numbers of years spent learning to play an instrument as revealed by the student survey. The findings of SPSS analysis reveal that both non-instrument learners and instrument learners showed significant increases in motivation when using mobile tablets as an instrument to compose popular music in class. Different modes of learning, limitations and suggestions are also discussed in mobile composing. 

 

Speaker 5: Mr LEE King Cheung Calvin PhD Candidate of CCA

Topic: Factors in the motivations of studio-based musical instrument learners in Hong Kong: An in-depth interview study

Abstract: In this study, I investigated the factors affecting the motivation of studio-based instrumental learners in Hong Kong. I interviewed a total of 13 participants who learnt the violin and/or the piano. I analyzed the interview data by selective coding accordingly to the three basic needs in the conceptual framework of Basic Psychology Needs Theory, which is one of the mini-theories from Self-Determination Theory. The thematization of basic needs is (1) autonomy, (2) relatedness, and (3) competency. I found relatedness and competence were more related to the participants. This study contributes to the understanding of studio-based, learning-environment characteristics as well as specific motivation factors attributed to the distinctions between the violin and the piano learning environments in Hong Kong. I also discussed the issues of music learning in school and the teacher's style of teaching practice.
