Professional Studies

This domain offers a range of social, philosophical, technological and professional studies designed to prepare students for the teaching profession. It is made up of the following strands: Educational Studies, Major & Minor Methods and other professionally related modules such as Classroom Language (Chinese) and Information Technology in Secondary Classrooms.

The Educational Studies expose students to psychological, philosophical, social, theoretical and local contextual issues in education. They aim to develop in students a willingness and ability to engage in the dual processes of theorising and practising. Students develop an appreciation for the educational needs and dispositions of secondary school learners and study progressive methods of teaching. The students are encouraged to develop a habit of reflecting on their own process of learning to teach.

Major and Minor Methods provide students with the essential knowledge and skills, such as lesson planning, resources and teaching strategies, needed for teaching the subjects.

Field Experience

Field experience aims to facilitate the gradual transformation of the school leavers entering the programme into students of teaching, and finally to individuals who demonstrate competence as independent and reflective beginning teachers, capable of commencing full-time teaching in schools. This domain relates Academic Studies to Professional Studies by providing students with opportunities to test theories and understandings gained from studies in these two domains.

General Education

General Education contributes to the personal and social development of students by providing opportunities for explorations in areas outside their specialist subject disciplines giving them wider knowledge horizons both in humanities and sciences. It covers a range of subjects which help to broaden and enrich students' tertiary education experience.

Elective Options

Elective Options are provided for students to obtain greater depth and undertake independent explorations in either the academic or professional domains; or for general education pursuits.
