Our campus has achieved notable milestones in reducing environmental impact through a comprehensive decarbonisation roadmap, emphasising energy efficiency, renewable energy, and resource conservation. In 2024-2025, photovoltaic systems increased renewable energy generation by 13.31%, while per capita electricity and water consumption decreased by 11.27% and 9.23%, respectively. To promote low-carbon transportation, we have expanded our electric vehicle charging infrastructure, now providing charging stations in approximately half of our indoor parking spaces, to encourage cleaner commuting options. We are also committed to waste reduction; for example, the deployment of smart recycling bins, incentivised by a points system, has improved resource recovery efforts. Our sustainability initiatives extend beyond energy and waste management: we go further through our research and education efforts. Between June 2024 and February 2025, a research team, led by Professor Ho Wing-kei, Head of the Department of Science and Environmental Studies and Dr Deng Wenjing, Associate Professor of the Department of Science, and Environmental Studies, conducted a pioneering study examining harmful airborne substances in schools in the Chinese Mainland and Belgium, and travelled to Sri Lanka to conduct educational and promotional activities related to indoor air quality, and disseminate their research findings overseas. EdUHK’s research team is the first in Hong Kong to detect endocrine-disrupting chemicals and bacteria in school environments.
