The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2024-2025 4 Chairman’s Foreword EdUHK stands poised to play a unique role in establishing the ‘Study in Hong Kong’ brand, along with the 2024-2035 Master Plan on Building China into a Leading Country in Education, which envisions China as a leader in education. The emphasis on moral education within this plan resonates deeply with our commitment to the themes of our ‘Education Futures’ direction, underscoring the integral role that values education play in shaping the educators of tomorrow. I am immensely pleased to reflect on EdUHK’s accomplishments over the past year, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our management team and the entire EdUHK community. Their unwavering dedication and support have been vital in advancing our mission. The latest rankings from various university ranking institutions, coupled with innovation awards and researching funding results, serve as indicators as to how far we have come in terms of learning and teaching, research and knowledge exchange. Additionally, the recent Audit Report by the Quality Assurance Council under the University Grants Committee highlights our commitment to upholding rigorous academic standards and enhancing the quality of learning and teaching. Its identification of five features of good practice reaffirms our collective efforts in this regard. 為配合《教育強國建設規劃綱要(2024-2035年)》提出建 設教育強國的目標,教大充分發揮自身的優勢,積極打 造「留學香港」品牌。該規劃綱要對德育的重視,與教 大秉承「教育未來」的發展方向不謀而合,這也突顯價 值觀教育是培育未來教育人才不可或缺的一部分。 我非常高興能夠與大家回顧教大在過去一年所取得的成 就,並衷心感謝大學管理團隊及所有教大成員,因為大 家的付出與支持對教大秉承使命至關重要。各大學排名 機構的最新排名、獲得的創新獎項與研究資助成果,均 顯示教大在學與教、研究與知識交流方面的顯著進展。 此外,大學教育資助委員會轄下之質素保證局最新發表 的質素核證報告,也肯定了教大在堅守嚴謹學術標準及 提升學與教質素方面的承諾,同時指出五項「良好實踐 做法」,進一步印證大家集體努力的成果。 校董會主席前言 As I present my fifth review as Council Chairman, I am filled with a sense of gratitude in the remarkable journey we have undertaken together over the last year at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). 在擔任校董會主席發表第五份年報前言之 際,回望過去一年我們在香港教育大學 (教大)一起走過的精彩旅程,心中實在充 滿感激。
香港教育大學 2024-2025 年報 5 Chairman’s Foreword 校董會主席前言 It was with great enthusiasm that we unveiled our Strategic Plan 20252031, a product of extensive collaboration among our Council Members, senior management, academic and administrative colleagues, as well as various stakeholders. This plan positions EdUHK to address the challenges of the next six years by equipping our students, focusing our research efforts, and supporting our community. We find ourselves in a time of significant transformation, characterised by rapid technological advancements and evolving pedagogies. There is therefore a need for future-ready teachers and professionals who are adaptable to change, and can address the pressing demands of society, in terms of ethics, digital competency, social inclusion and awareness of national identity. The University has already made significant strides to ensure that our graduates are well-equipped for the future challenges. We have launched an array of programmes and courses at both the undergraduate and master’s levels, ensuring that all Bachelor of Education students can pursue double degree programmes in relevant disciplines. Our collaborations with institutions across the Greater Bay Area, Chinese Mainland, Belt and Road countries, and beyond provide our students and academics with invaluable experiences and perspectives, as well as the opportunity to share and enhance research and expertise. Exciting times lie ahead, as we aim to enhance EdUHK’s reputation as a leading university in the Asia-Pacific region, and further strengthen our networks locally, nationally and internationally. I look forward to the opening of the new facilities, which will serve to offer students and scholars greater capacity and technology. Furthermore, we are dedicated to assisting schools and society in adapting to change. Promoting sustainability among our students and within the community is paramount as we continue to play a significant role in establishing Hong Kong as an education hub and in supporting the country’s development. 香港教育大學 2024-2025 年報 7 President’s Overview 校長的話 Global Recognition and Academic Excellence Upon our anniversary celebrations, good news kept rolling in. In the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings, EdUHK made an extraordinary debut, landing in the world’s top 10% at 195th globally. Our strength in education was further validated by placing 12th worldwide, fourth in Asia and second in Hong Kong in the QS World Rankings by Subject 2025. These achievements, alongside the highly positive audit by the Quality Assurance Council under the University Grants Committee, affirm our academic and research excellence and growing reputation in the global arena, and should serve as a beacon to our future strategic development. Strategic Vision 2025-2031: Education for a Dynamic Future This May, we unveiled Strategic Plan 2025-2031 under the theme ‘Education Futures’, outlining the University’s comprehensive vision for its next phase of development. ‘Futures’, in its plural form, embodies both promise and peril: in our unprecedentedly interconnected digital age, we celebrate imagination, collaboration, cross-disciplinary thinking, life and values education, even as moral, philosophical, and social challenges loom on the horizon. To prepare students for such complex and volatile times, we have oriented our education towards cultivating future-ready educators and professionals equipped with cutting-edge knowledge, digital literacy, adaptability, and strong moral character to thrive in the digital age. This includes transforming all undergraduate education programmes into double-degree schemes, ensuring our future teachers possess both pedagogical expertise and disciplinary depth. The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2024-2025 8 President’s Overview 校長的話 EdUHK’s education continues to be distinguished by its deep commitment to fostering core virtues and values. To this end, we have integrated national education, national security education, teacher ethics and values education into both formal and non-formal learning activities. Our pioneering New Six Arts courses, modelled on classical Chinese education, with an aim to deepen students’ appreciation of Chinese culture while imparting essential life skills. Our commitment extends to developing education that emphasises positive values and social responsibility, supporting the vision of building a cohesive and forward-looking society. In alignment with the 2024-2035 Master Plan on Building China into a Leading Country in Education, an impressive range of new courses has been introduced, many focusing on AI and emerging technologies, designed to attract and cultivate talents essential for the nation’s advancement. Research and Innovation: Driving Societal Progress Research remains a vital pillar of EdUHK’s mission. In the past year, our innovative work has garnered global recognition, with the University rising to the third place in education and educational research in the U.S. News and World Report rankings, and achieving 90th worldwide in arts and humanities. Most notably, 54 faculty members were listed among the world’s top 2%most-cited scientists by Stanford University in 2025. Spanning neuroscience, healthcare, sustainability, sport, and educational technologies, our innovations have also been most impactful: reaping a total of 43 international awards. Further, to tackle great challenges of the day, we have formed nine strategic clusters around themes of social science data analytics, environmental toxicology, longevity, social media, career and life development among others, to draw a critical mass of researchers across disciplines to conduct paradigm-changing inquiries and devise solutions. Forging New Frontiers in Global Education Partnerships Collaboration continues to drive EdUHK’s academic excellence and impact on different fronts, with new partnerships formed alongside strengthening ties across the Chinese Mainland, Belt and Road countries and international institutions through alliances, conferences, visits, and exchanges. On the front of Chinese Mainland engagement, our accomplishments were manifold, with us collaborating with China Foreign Affairs University to enhance foreign affairs education and joining hands with Renmin University in fostering national education. We have pushed the envelope in linguistics research through partnering with the Center for Chinese Linguistics at Peking University, and an education forum was held in partnership with Tsinghua University to explore how AI transforms education and learning. Our Belt and Road partnerships achieved significant milestones, including inaugurating the EdUHK–Kazakh Academy and establishing a new regional education institute with Brunei’s Ministry of Education and Universiti Brunei Darussalam. We further developed collaborations in the Middle East through academic capacity building programmes in Saudi Arabia, dual degree programmes and joint research grants with United Arab Emirates University, and two-way summer exchanges with Umm Al-Qura University. 教大始終以正向價值觀教育為核心。為此,我們將國民 教育、國家安全教育、師德師風與價值觀教育融入正式 與非正式的學習活動中。其中,教大首創的「新六藝課 程」,以傳統中國教育為藍本,旨在深化學生對中華文 化的理解,同時傳授實用的生活技能與核心價值觀,全 面提升學生的品格修養與文化素養。 我們高度重視在教育中培養正向道德觀念與社會責任 感。為響應國家的《教育強國建設規劃綱要(2024-2035 年)》,教大推出一系列新課程,聚焦於人工智能與新興 科技,以吸引並培養相關人才,全力支持國家持續發展 與進步。 科研與創新:驅動社會進步 科研是教大其中一個核心使命。在過去一年,我們的 科研成果在國際舞台上獲得廣泛認可。根據《美國新聞 與世界報道》全球最佳大學排名,教大在教育及教育研 究領域躍升至全球第三位,藝術與人文學科則位列第 九十位。此外,教大五十四名學者榮膺二零二五年史丹 福大學全球首2%頂尖科學家。我們的科研團隊在神經 科學、醫療健康、可持續管理、運動及教育科技等多個 領域,贏得了四十三項國際獎項。為應對日益嚴峻的挑 戰,我們設立了九個策略性研究集群,涵蓋社會科學數 據分析、環境毒理學、長壽研究、社交媒體、職業及生 涯發展等領域,匯聚專業人才,開展高品質的多領域研 究,並提出切實可行的解決方案,為社會帶來積極的影 響。 開拓全球教育新藍海 協作是教大追求學術卓越、在各領域持續產生影響的 重要推動力。除了與中國內地、「一帶一路」國家及國 際機構攜手合作外,我們也從多層面深化夥伴關係。在 中國內地方面,我們取得了豐碩的成果,包括與外交學 院展開策略性合作,強化中國外交教育;與中國人民大 學簽訂合作框架協議,促進愛國主義教育;與北京大學 中文語言中心合作,推動語言研究;以及與清華大學共 同舉辦教育論壇,探討人工智能對教育與學習的變革作 用。 我們與「一帶一路」國家的合作亦取得里程碑式的進展, 包括與哈薩克斯坦高等院校共同建立教育研究院,與汶 萊教育部和汶萊大學合作成立區域教育研究院。此外, 我們亦持續加強與中東地區合作夥伴的策略性聯繫,不 僅與阿聯酋大學合作設立雙學位課程,並共同推動科研 資助計劃;同時,亦與沙特阿拉伯烏姆· 庫拉大學合辦 暑期雙向學生交換項目。
香港教育大學 2024-2025 年報 9 President’s Overview 校長的話 Further afield, we deepened our partnership with the Institute of Education (IOE) of University College London (UCL) to promote research collaboration and student exchange. The second annual conference of our flagship Global Research Institute for Finnish Education (now Global Research Institute for Finnish, European, and Global South Education) was reputedly the world’s largest gathering to decipher the success of Finnish education. Our collaboration with Harvard University and Stanford University yielded a productive symposium on technology integration in teaching and talent development. Championing Sustainability and Shaping Future Education Sustainability stands at the heart of our institutional mission, guiding us towards a greener future. Led by a senior management task force, which I am honoured to co-chair, our campus has made bold strides, cutting per capita energy and water use by a tenth, while harnessing a 13% rise in renewable energy generation. Beyond our grounds, we nurture a lowcarbon legacy, supporting bioresource innovations on Lantau Island and uplifting the well-being of Tai Po’s senior community. Our vision extends into the city’s pulse as we set foot in the heart of the city, with our state-of-the-art, eco-conscious West Kowloon Study Centres at Xiqu Centre and M+ Building, as well as the New Academic Building on our Tai Po campus coming into use in the first quarter of 2026. These new facilities embody our commitment to evolving learning, making world-class education accessible and sustainable for generations to come. Entering its thirties, EdUHK is ready to take on greater responsibilities: treasuring our core role as a thought leader in education, we are dedicated to shaping local and global educational landscapes and inspiring educators worldwide. In decades to come, we are eager to champion transformative approaches and disciplines vital for the advancement of Hong Kong, our nation and the world. As we approach the 10th anniversary of EdUHK’s retitling next year, we do so with vigour and vision, ready to scale new heights in academic innovation. With great anticipation for the future, I commend this Report to you, and invite you to witness or, better still, join us in penning the EdUHK legend. At this vibrant hub of innovation and higher learning, students are empowered with knowledge, skills and vision to unlock their talents and make a positive impact in society. Fostering Future-readiness Technological advancements have reshaped the way we live, work, and interact with each other. In the advent of a transformative epoch, we respond proactively by taking the lead in innovating and enhancing our educational offerings, shaping EdUHK into a magnet for diverse talents. These efforts fully align with the national education strategy as outlined in the 2024-2035 Master Plan on Building China into a Leading Country in Education through enhancing the teaching profession, and building an outstanding teaching force. The 2024-2025 academic year saw an array of innovations being introduced to the curriculum, many to heartening results. To begin with, our teaching and research were highly commended in the Third Quality Audit by the Quality Assurance Council under the University Grants Committee (UGC), which identified effective benchmarking, societal relevance of programmes, good use of data in enhancing learning and teaching, use of new technology, and innovative learning assessment as our good practices. 香港教育大學 2024-2025 年報 13 Diverse Talents for Our Futures 多元專才 成就未來 Cultivating AI and Digital Competency The 21st century is a whirlwind of technological innovations and advancements – mastering digital skills becomes essential for one to thrive in the future world of study and work. In a bid to encourage students to integrate and apply the digital competencies they have acquired throughout their studies, EdUHK pioneered a new capstone project pathway on AI and emerging technologies, which was piloted in undergraduate programmes for heritage education and arts management, English studies and digital communication, AI and educational technology, and sports science and coaching. On the teaching front, committed to advancing education through innovative practices, the University launched the Large Language Model Studio in the latter half of 2024 to provide academic and teaching staff with a sophisticated platform and tailored trainings to harness the power of the natural language processing tools for their teaching. Students also actively utilised the Studio to develop their projects, enhancing their learning experience and digital proficiency. Thinking without Bounds Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary development is the mark of the interconnected times we inhabit, and we want our students to leverage the abounding opportunities presented by such exhilarating times through equipping them with knowledge and skills straddling diverse subjects. Buttressing book learning with hands-on experience, our Experiential Learning Courses encourage students to learn through doing. The courses on entrepreneurship and innovation, for instance, were fully implemented in the year under review, taken by a total of 700 students. In addition, we have revamped all our bachelor’s programmes for education into double degree programmes, combining education degrees with other professional disciplines. This approach provides students with multiple pathways to pursue teaching alongside another career, ensuring they develop strong disciplinary expertise to support their teaching aspirations and future endeavours. At undergraduate and postgraduate levels, we have been unstinting in our efforts to curate new programmes for burgeoning fields that play a pivotal role in the city, the country and the world’s advancement. Similar curriculumemphases will also be launched for higher diploma and postgraduate diploma in education programmes setting our teachers fair for the evolving educational landscape. Discover the World with No Limits Believing that real knowledge is ever rooted in experience, we offer a plenitude of opportunities for students to experience diverse cultures and broaden their horizons. Starting with the 2024-2025 cohort, the locations of block practice and field experience have been extended fromHong Kong SAR to the Greater Bay Area. Alternatively, to foster global citizenship, crosscultural understanding, and sustainable development, new courses with overseas learning experiences in Finland, France, South Korea, and Zanzibar have been developed. We also awarded full scholarships to a group of outstanding students, enabling them to participate in an enriching summer programme at the University of Oxford, where they engaged with worldclass academics under Oxford’s historic arches. Through curriculum innovations and collaborations, it inculcates adaptability, resilience, moral clarity, civic-mindedness and a sense of national identity in its students, shaping them into future-ready and morally responsible educators and professionals. In line with our educational priorities, the University has integrated national education into formal and non-formal teaching. In addition to a year-long general education foundation course for freshmen and cross-faculty core course that covers the Basic Law, national identity and national security, students admitted from the 2025-2026 academic year onwards will take compulsory courses on national education, national security education and legal knowledge to deepen their understanding of the country. 加強價值觀及文化教育 教大的教育特色在於注重正確價值觀培育。通過課程創 新與協作,我們培養學生的適應力、抗逆力、道德觀、 公民意識及國民身份認同感,塑造面向未來、具社會責 任感的教育工作者及專業人士。 緊扣我們的教育重點,大學已將國民教育融入正規與非 正規教學中。除了為新生開設為期一年的通識教育基礎 課程,以及涵蓋《基本法》、國民身份認同與國家安全的 跨學院核心科目外,自二零二五至二零二六學年起入讀 的學生還需修讀國民教育、國家安全教育及法律知識必 修課,以深化對國家的認知。 大學積極聯動社會各界以提升國民教育的社會認知度。 例如為推廣全民國家安全教育日,大學於校內舉行升旗 儀式,並與大埔、油尖旺及東區民政事務處合辦專題講 座、各類比賽及頒獎禮。 為豐富國民教育的形式與內容,二零二四年十二月,教 大代表到訪湖南第一師範學院,並簽署合作備忘錄,共 建「香港教育大學 — 湖南第一師範學院共建大思政教育 創新發展中心」,探索開發相關課程模組,以促進中國 內地和香港在愛國主義教育領域的交流與合作。 The University proactively reached out to the community to raise awareness of national education. For example, to promote National Security Education Day, the University held a flag-raising ceremony on campus and collaborated with the District Offices in Tai Po, Yau Tsim Mong, and Eastern districts to organise seminars, competitions and awards presentation ceremonies. Looking for ways to enrich national education, EdUHK representatives visited Hunan First Normal University in December 2024 and signed a memorandum of understanding with the latter to establish the EdUHKHFNU Joint Centre for Innovative Ideological and Political Education, which will develop course modules and promote exchanges and cooperation in patriotic education between Hong Kong SAR and the Chinese Mainland. Starting with the 2024-2025 intake, EdUHK has introduced the New Six Arts curriculum, which reimagines the classical six arts of rites, music, archery, charioteering, literacy, and numeracy against the modern context to deepen students’ appreciation of Chinese culture and endow them with important life skills. Further, to address society’s growing expectations for teachers, we introduced Exit Requirements for Teachers’ Professional Conduct and Ethics for students enrolling on teacher education programmes starting from BEd and double degree programmes from the 2024-2025 cohort. Among the requirements are enhanced elements in teachers’ professional conduct and ethics cultivated via field experience, courses and co-curricular activities. Where Sporting and Scholarly Excellences Come Together As an ‘elite athlete friendly university’, EdUHK lends crucial support to elite athletes through its flexible learning arrangements, enabling them to excel in both sport and scholarship. In the 2024-2025 academic year, we admitted 22 athletes to our undergraduate programmes, nine to our postgraduate programmes, and 11 athletes were graduating this year. Nine students and graduates were China and Hong Kong, China team representatives at the Olympic Games in Paris. A keen sportswomanwho is training hard for theOlympics, Mak is amember of the University’s basketball and soccer teams, and she has had her first taste of contact rugby at the University and gone on to represent Hong Kong, China in the Super Seven Series in the United Kingdom. 麥卓穎,香港女子帆船運動員,十三歲時在Techno 293滑浪風帆世界錦標賽為香港奪得U15女子組史上首枚金牌。她現於教 大修讀體育教育課程,立志將來成為一名體育教師,培養兒童對運動與健康生活的熱愛。作為一名積極備戰奧運的運動員, 她亦是教大籃球和足球隊的成員,更在校內首次接觸英式橄欖球後,獲選代表中國香港出戰英國超級七人欖球系列賽,展現 多元運動才能。 Ho Cheuk-kiu, a Year 2 student in physical education, is a Chinese martial arts champion who reaped multiple awards in the First China-ASEAN Wushu Championship in 2024, among others. Like many, he got into Chinese martial arts to improve his health and physique. What makes him persevere, though, is the invaluable values and philosophies imbuing this traditional art. Inspired and uplifted by this distinctive art, he aspires to perfect his skills and mindset and promotes this gem of Chinese culture to the University community and the wider public. 何卓橋,體育教育課程二年級學生,中國武術冠軍,在二零二四年首屆中國 — 東盟武術錦標賽及其他賽事中奪得多個獎項。 與許多人一樣,他最初習武的目的是為強身健體,但中華武術蘊含的寶貴價值觀與哲學理念成為他堅持的動力。受這門獨特 藝術的啟迪與鼓舞,他立志精益求精,將中華文化瑰寶推廣至大學社群及廣大公眾。
