The Education University of Hong Kong | Annual Report 2023-2024

The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2023-2024 32 In order to promote physical activity at all ages, EdUHK organised a light volleyball competition for older adults, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, as well as similar competitions in Shenzhen and Nanchang. This was part of a research project, which revealed that the sport could significantly improve the health of older adults, when compared to tai chi, and is being promoted in the three cities. Additionally, a Sitting Light Volleyball competition was held including teams from the Shenzhen Disabled Persons’ Federation for the first time. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the challenges faced by elderly people living alone not only in terms of physical health but also in coping with isolation caused by social distancing measures. The University’s scholars, working together with other local scholars and overseas experts, found that elders who received mindfulness intervention and behavioural activation reported lower feelings of loneliness, improved sleep quality, reduced symptoms of depression and decreased anxiety levels.
