The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2023-2024 26 During the year, 30 prestigious international innovation awards were garnered. These included eight Gold Medals, six Special Awards, an Organiser’s Choice Award and a Jury’s Choice Award. The innovations provide solutions in a wide range of areas frommeasuring ocular misalignment to a detection system in case people fall. The reporting period also saw eight patents granted and 16 others filed to protect EdUHK inventions, ranging from emotional recognition to quantifying microplastics. Supported by the HKSAR Government and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and applied through the Hong Kong Sports Institute, the Sports Science and Research Funding Scheme aims to enhance the competitiveness of athletes and help them better prepare for major international sports events in the coming few years. One research project entitled ‘An IoT Edge Monitoring System for Enhanced and Personalized Management of Athletes’ Nutrition and Performance’ was awarded HK$7.82 million under this scheme in 2023-24. The objective of this project is to develop an Athletes Nutrition Management System (ANMS) that can objectively monitor and optimise the performance and health of athletes by tracking their food and nutrition intake. This will enable coaches and nutritionists to prescribe personalised nutrition plans to meet the individual nutritional needs based on an athlete’s body composition, activity level, training schedule, and injury recovery rate, and monitor their progress. EdUHK has made significant strides in promoting and facilitating applications for the Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF) during the fiscal year 2023-24. For instance, the ‘Social Robot for English Language Learners among Young Learners’ project was funded under the Innovation and Technology Fund for Better Living. The project is led by Professor Susanna Yeung Siu-sze from the Department of Psychology. It aims to develop an interactive social robot to enhance the English language skills, interests and motivation of kindergarten and primary students. The three-year project, funded with a total of HK$5.5 million, is intended to make a substantial impact on language education with cutting-edge AI technology for young learners. Another highlight project was awarded funding through the Innovation and Technology Support Programme. Led by Dr Michael Yeung Kin-chung from the Department of Psychology, the seed project entitled ‘Developing an EEG-fNIRS Neurofeedback Application for Brain Training for Autistic Children’ seeks to develop a versatile and novel combined EEG-fNIRS neurofeedback application to offer synergistic brain training for autistic children. The ITSP seed project received HK$1.4 million for research and development over an 18-month period. Children playing with the ‘Social Robot for English Language Learners among Young Learners’ in an exhibition
