The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2023-2024 4 Chairman’s Foreword The reporting year was one of great accomplishment and development. I am grateful to the senior management team and the entire University community for their continued dedication and support. In line with the 2016-2025 Strategic Plan, EdUHK continued to nurture future educators and professionals, while further building on its reputation for research and knowledge transfer. Celebrating a century-old heritage The year saw a range of events celebrating the University’s 30th anniversary as well as the century-old education heritage from which EdUHK emerged. These deep roots define who we are today, with a strong focus on nurturing our graduates’ positive values, professional traditions and culture, guiding them through their professional career and passing on to future generations. Our 30th anniversary celebrations began in November 2023, on the occasion of the installation ceremony for President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, and culminating in the gala dinner in November 2024. All events highlighted the University’s enduring legacy while setting the stage for its bright and ambitious future. Embracing interdisciplinary collaboration for the future I am particularly pleased with the University’s strides towards adopting an interdisciplinary approach. The establishment of two new Academies represents a significant step in fostering collaboration across disciplines, addressing the evolving demands of the future economy, and nurturing innovation in advanced sectors. Collaborations with institutions and governments across the Hong Kong SAR, the Greater Bay Area, the Chinese Mainland and beyond have expanded opportunities for both academics and students. This network of partnerships enhances knowledge in areas such as teacher professional ethics and Chinese culture, while amplifying EdUHK’s impact on broader communities. During the reporting year, EdUHK remained dedicated to its mission of sharing expertise with diverse sectors of society, including those with special needs, schoolchildren, teachers, parents and the older population. The University also expanded its footprint on the Chinese Mainland and Southeast Asia, further demonstrating its commitment to contributing to the regional educational landscape. Nurturing future educators and social leaders With its rich heritage, we deeply understand EdUHK’s role and vision in today’s changing world. As a leading university in education, EdUHK is not only a centre of teaching and learning but also a hub of innovation, tasked with shaping educational solutions for the future and making meaningful social impact locally, nationally, and globally. In this respect, EdUHK’s teacher education roots make it unique among the eight University Grants Committee-funded universities, in that the skills, methods and values taught to students will be passed on to future generations. As such, EdUHK’s future also epitomises the future of education in Hong Kong SAR as part of Mainland China. This is something in which the University takes immense pride and feels a profound sense of responsibility. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere thanks to the outgoing Council Members, Prof Lui Hon-kwong, Mr Yau Siu-hung, Dr Sammy Hui King-fai, Dr Park Jae-hyung, Miss Emily Cheung Yu-yi and Ms Sarah Wong Man-yee for their commitment and wise counsel. The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2023-2024 6 Milestones and achievements We are greatly indebted to the expertise, hard work and dedication of a vast number of academics, supporters, donors and members of the Council and the HKSAR government over the decades. This heritage has provided EdUHK with a solid foundation to provide high-quality learning and teaching, impactful research and knowledge transfer, and support for the community, locally, nationally and globally. Building on this solid foundation, our influence is evident in the around 1,000 educators we graduate each year. More than 80% of kindergarten and primary school teachers in Hong Kong, and 30% of secondary school teachers, count among our alumni. Since 2003, over 70% of the recipients of the Chief Executive’s Award for Teaching Excellence have been EdUHK graduates. These figures illustrate our profound and lasting impact on educational development. Education Futures and innovation Our theme for the 30th anniversary – Education, Talent, Virtue (育才 弘教 立德樹人) – underscores our unique commitment to equally nurturing talent and cultivating virtue, the foundation of whole-person education. We are dedicated to developing educators and professionals, while driving educational innovation. Our efforts aim to promote Hong Kong’s continued high-quality economic and social development and contribute to the nation’s advancement in new quality productive forces. 里程碑與成就 我們衷心感激過去數十年來一眾學者、支持者、捐贈 者、校董會及香港特區政府成員,對教大發展所給予的 專業指導、辛勤付出和無私奉獻。這份珍貴的傳承為 教大奠定了堅實的基礎,讓我們得以持續提供卓越的教 學、開展具深遠影響力的科研與知識轉移項目,並在本 地、國家乃至全球範圍內貢獻力量。 在此穩固的基礎上,教大每年培育約一千名教育工作 者。超過80%的香港幼稚園及小學教師,以及約30%的 中學教師,均為教大校友。自二零零三年以來,超過 70%的「行政長官卓越教學獎」得主均來自教大,這些 數據充分彰顯了教大在教育領域中所作出的貢獻,影響 力不言而喻。 教育未來與創新 教大三十周年的校慶主題 — 「育才弘教 立德樹人」, 不僅強調了「才」與「德」的重要,更凸顯了我們秉持全 人教育理念的核心使命。教大致力於培養教育工作者與 專業人才,同時積極推動教育創新,肩負着推動經濟及 社會高質量發展的重任,為國家提升新質生產力作出重 要貢獻。 President’s Overview 校長的話 It is a great honour to present my first President’s Overview; especially as The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) celebrates its 30th anniversary. Over its 100-year legacy, the University has led in nurturing talent for our city, country, and beyond. 很榮幸在香港教育大學(教大)成立三十周年之際,向大家呈上本 人作為校長的首份年報。秉承逾百年的師訓傳統,教大一直致力 為香港、國家、乃至全球教育發展培養卓越人才。

香港教育大學 2023-2024 年報 7 President’s Overview 校長的話 To this end, we established two new academies last year: the Academy for Educational Development and Innovation (AEDI) and the Academy for Applied Policy Studies and Education Futures (AAPSEF). Guided by the country’s focus on education, science, and innovation as pillars for national development, these academies enhance interdisciplinary synergy, serving as platforms for collaboration and high-quality comparative studies. They cover diverse areas such as teacher education, special education, vocational training, applied policy research, national security, artificial intelligence (AI), metaverse education, Chinese language, and intangible cultural heritage education. Our entire EdUHK community works together to nurture students’ comprehensive growth across five fundamental dimensions: ethics, intellect, physical and mental health, social skills, and aesthetics. These dimensions are as important today as they have always been, as they enable students to be open-minded, empathetic, and embrace positive values and innovation in a rapidly changing world. 為實踐這一使命,教大去年成立了兩所新學院,分別為 「教育發展與創新學院」,以及「應用政策研究與教育未 來學院」。這兩所學院全面貫徹國家在教育、科技與人 才發展上的戰略部署,推動跨學科協同合作,並致力成 為促進高質量合作與比較研究的平台。學院的研究範疇 涵蓋教師教育、特殊教育、職業培訓、應用政策研究、 國家安全、人工智能、元宇宙教育、中國語言及非物質 文化遺產教育等多元領域。 教大全體同仁將攜手並進,在道德修養、智性發展、身 心健康、社交能力及美學素養等五大核心領域,促進學 生的全面成長。確保他們在瞬息萬變的世界中擁有開放 的態度、同理心、正向價值觀及勇於創新的精神。

The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2023-2024 8 President’s Overview 校長的話 Well-rounded education with an emphasis on virtues and professional ethics Values education refers to the adoption of positive values and attitudes such as perseverance, respect and care for life, being responsible and understanding national identity. Students must learn and practise such values and attitudes for their own life journey and pass them on to the younger generation. During the reporting year we introduced several initiatives in this light, including two Positive and Values Education courses; the establishment of the EdUHK-QFNU Centre of Professional Ethics for Teachers, in partnership with Qufu Normal University; and the creation of the National Security and Legal Education Research Centre. 以師德與價值觀為核心的全人教育 價值觀教育強調建立學生正面的價值觀和態度,包括堅 毅、尊重生命、關懷行善、責任感及國家認同等品德素 養。我希望學生在生命歷程中學習並踐行這些價值觀與 態度,並將其傳承給下一代。在過去一年,我們推出了 多項相關舉措,包括:開辦兩門正向教育與價值教育課 程;與曲阜師範大學合作成立「香港教育大學 - 曲阜師 範大學師德教育基地」以及創建「國家安全與法律教育 研究中心」。 In terms of intellectual education, our curriculum blends in-depth subject knowledge with a broader societal and advanced technological perspective. Various learning and teaching projects utilising pedagogical approaches suited for an AI-enhanced environment were implemented. The past year saw the launch of a new Cross-faculty Core Course incorporating educational visits to the Greater Bay Area, to the new undergraduate curriculum, and experiential learning courses on entrepreneurship and innovation. The University won 30 prestigious international innovation awards and 49 of our scholars were named in the list of the World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists. The University ranked fifth in Asia and 20th in the world in education, according to Quacquarelli Symonds, and we forged a host of exchange partnerships with other institutions in mainland China, Belt and Road countries and beyond, to help broaden our students’ and academics’ knowledge and horizons. 在智性教育方面,教大的課程融合了深入的學科知識、 廣闊的社會視野及先進科技觀點,並推行了多項引入人 工智能元素的教學項目。報告年度內,我們開辦了新的 跨學院核心科目,將粵港澳大灣區考察納入本科課程, 並開設了創業與創新經驗學習課程。此外,教大在國際 創新比賽中共贏得三十項國際創新大獎,另有四十九 位學者入選全球首2%科學家名單。根據QS世界大學學 科排名,教大在教育領域亞洲排名第五,全球位列第 二十。為了進一步拓闊學生及學者的學術及國際視野, 我們與中國內地、「一帶一路」沿線國家及不同地區的 多所院校建立了交流合作夥伴關係。

香港教育大學 2023-2024 年報 9 President’s Overview 校長的話 It is also essential that graduates are cognisant of their own physical and mental wellbeing and that of others. EdUHK promotes physical education at all levels, from community sport to elite athletes. This year we organised competitions and courses for children with special educational needs and for the elderly, such as the Light Volleyball for Older Adults competitions in Hong Kong SAR, Shenzhen and Nanchang. We also opened up dual pathways to a wider range of elite athletes so that they may pursue their studies while furthering their sporting careers. Our elite athlete students enjoyed success at the 2023 Asian Games and Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, as well as the Paris 2024 Olympics. EdUHK also nurtures social skills, including volunteering schemes, such as the Student-led Community Service Project, which encourages students to design and conduct self-initiated projects to develop leadership capacity and project management capability while contributing to the community. Additionally, our scholars investigate social issues, such as a study on the positive effect mindfulness intervention and behavioural activation had on elderly people living alone during the COVID-19 pandemic. To further develop aesthetics education, the University has established the Centre for Classical Chinese Education and the Xiqu and Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre. In terms of creative and cultural arts, four of our students won the Merit Award in the Disney Imaginations Hong Kong Design Competition 2024, and a project to develop personalised and cost-effective music learning solutions for students by using AI, won a Gold Award in the 2024 Hong Kong Techathon+ competition. Celebration and thanks EdUHK has experienced a year of significant achievement and celebration. I thank our colleagues, students, and the EdUHK family for their crucial contributions. Together, we can aspire to even greater accomplishments beyond our 30th anniversary, reaching new heights for the benefit of the EdUHK community, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and our country. Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, JP President 教大亦培養畢業生關注自身及他人的身心健康,致力於 在各社會層面推動體育教育,從社區運動到精英運動員 的培訓均有所涵蓋。年內,我們針對特殊教育需求學生 及長者推出了相關的課程與比賽,包括在香港特區、深 圳和南昌舉行了長者輕排球比賽。我們亦為更多精英運 動員提供雙軌發展的途徑,讓他們能夠在學業與運動生 涯之間取得平衡。多位教大的精英運動員更在二零二三 年杭州亞運會及亞洲殘疾人運動會,以及二零二四巴黎 奧運會上取得佳績。 社交能力亦是教大全人教育的重要一環。我們推出多項 志願服務項目,如「學生社會服務啟導計劃」,鼓勵學 生自主構思和實踐社區服務項目,從而提升他們領導力 和項目管理能力,同時回饋社會。此外,教大的學者亦 積極關注社會議題,例如其中一項關於靜觀介入和積極 行為介入的研究題示,這些研究在新冠疫情期間為獨居 長者帶來積極影響。 為進一步推動美育教育,教大成立了國學中心及戲曲與 非遺傳承中心。在創意和文化藝術領域,教大四位學生 於二零二四年「迪士尼幻想工程香港挑戰賽」榮獲優異 獎;我們一項應用人工智能技術,為學生提供高效且節 約成本的音樂學習方案亦於二零二四年的「Hong Kong Techathon+」比賽中榮獲冠軍。 誌慶與致謝 過去的一年是教大充滿周年歡慶和碩果纍纍的一年。我 由衷感謝每一位同仁、學生及教大大家庭的每一位成 員,為大學發展所作出的不懈努力。我深信,在各方的 攜手合作下,教大定能在三十周年後繼往開來,為教 大、香港特別行政區及國家再創高峰,創造更多卓越成 就。 李子建教授,JP 校長

香港教育大學 2023-2024 年報 11 The reporting year saw significant moves in the transition from the ‘Education-plus’ approach to ‘Education Futures’ for the University. Education-plus was founded on EdUHK’s programme accreditation status in education. Through it, the University extended its positive impact beyond the realm of education by widening its research scope to pave the way for leading multidisciplinary research, and developing programmes complementary to education, such as AI, emerging educational technologies, heritage education, and arts management, which realise innovation in education and address broader societal aims and needs. Today, with the advent of new technologies and unprecedented global challenges, the future is driven by creativity, technology, and innovation. This calls for a necessary transition to an interdisciplinary approach for the University, so that our students have a wide range of skills and remain open-minded going forward, enabling them to make a positive impact on society. To help achieve this, EdUHK has built on its Education-plus foundations towards ‘Education Futures’. Part of this transition is the commitment to further strengthen our multi- and inter-disciplinary capability in learning and teaching, and research. The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2023-2024 12 As for early-career academics, we welcomed six EdUHK-nominated candidates under the Research Grant Council’s (RGC) prestigious PhD Fellowship Scheme, and three candidates from Ethiopia, Indonesia and Myanmar under the HKSAR Government’s Belt and Road Scholarship for research postgraduate studies, in the reporting year. Teachers’ professional ethics and values The University proactively responded to the launch of the Guidelines on Teachers’ Professional Conduct and the Guiding Framework for Primary and Secondary Teacher Education Programmes (BEd) by the Education Bureau, and conducted a rigorous curriculum review to enrich its teacher education programmes. The Academic Board approved in September 2023 that the Exit Requirements for Teachers’ Professional Conduct and Ethics be implemented in phases, starting from the 2024-25 cohort of the full-time BEd and Co-terminal Double Degree (DD) programmes. A pathway spanning from Year 1 to Year 5 has been meticulously designed to enable students to achieve the Exit Requirements in three components: (i) fulfilling the assessment requirements of the Field Experience; (ii) satisfactory completion of two required courses related to Teachers’ Professional Conduct and Ethics; and (iii) fulfilment of relevant co-curricular requirement. To enhance quality in education and respond to societal demand, the University regularly carries out programme reviews and develops new specialisations, as well as major and minor courses. 香港教育大學 2023-2024 年報 13 The University also outlined plans for a new initiative with Qufu Normal University to establish the EdUHK-QFNU Centre of Professional Ethics for Teachers, to promote pre- and in-service teachers’ deeper understanding of the formulation of and latest developments in teachers’ professional ethics. This included the launch of the Experiential Learning on Teachers’ Professional Ethics course in Semester 2, 2023-24, which consisted of a one-week experiential learning camp for pre-service teachers in Qufu, Shandong, the hometown of Confucius. The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2023-2024 14 Paving a dual pathway Meanwhile, we continue to provide dual career pathways, in the form of Bachelor of Education with Bachelor of Arts double degree programmes, and providing elite athletes with the opportunity to benefit from a university education while pursuing a career in sport. EdUHK was the first UGC-funded institution to sign a collaborative agreement with the Hong Kong Sports Institute, providing elite athletes with a flexible admissions mechanism. At the 2023 Asian Games and Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, 50 of the athletes who represented Hong Kong were EdUHK undergraduates or graduates. Our students won Hong Kong’s first ever gold medal in the men’s rowing pairs at the Asian Games and won two silver and six bronze medals in various sports. 香港教育大學 2023-2024 年報 17 New curriculum initiatives were implemented during the reporting year, with emphasis placed on interdisciplinary learning. Nurturing future-ready educators The University offered innovative programmes and a comprehensive curriculum for students to equip them with essential skills and knowledge for the future. In 2023-24, the undergraduate curriculum was revamped with four key emphases for implementation from the 202526 cohort: Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Digital Competency, Legal Knowledge and National Security Education, and Living and Working in our Country to foster whole-person development for our students. Through various forms of learning, such as Field Experience at the Greater Bay Area and experiential learning activities on entrepreneurship and innovation, our graduates will be equipped with positive values, research skills, knowledge capability in STEAM, an understanding of sustainable development, and national and global perspectives. Comprising specialised centres, they have been created to better synergise our interdisciplinary expertise, and therefore serve as hubs of excellence to further extend our research impact in Hong Kong and beyond. 香港教育大學 2023-2024 年報 19 As one of the curriculum initiatives, a compulsory experiential learning course on entrepreneurship and innovation has been offered to noneducation programmes under the General Education Domain to increase students’ awareness and self-efficacy in the entrepreneurial process; provide concrete experiences in applying entrepreneurial models and innovative problem-solving; and equip students with the competencies and hands-on experience needed to initiate and participate in entrepreneurial value-creating activities. Embracing AI in education To ensure the incorporation of the latest technology in our teaching and learning initiatives, our E-Learning and Digital Competency Strategy was refined in 2023 to expand Virtual Teaching and Learning, integrating emerging technologies such as AI, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), and the metaverse into teaching and learning. 香港教育大學 2023-2024 年報 21 As part of its move towards a more interdisciplinary approach, along with its commitment to broadening students’ horizons and increasing researchers’ impact, the University signed a host of collaboration agreements throughout the reporting year. Enhancing collaborative efforts Partnerships were formed in key areas such as artificial intelligence and education futures, ethics, virtues, professionalism, and sport. For example, the Artificial Intelligence and Education Futures Alliance was formed with The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and East China Normal University (ECNU). The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2023-2024 22 Furthermore, in line with the Hong Kong SAR Government’s strategy of promoting vocational and professional education and training as a parallel pathway to conventional academic education, the University signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Alliance for Education Accreditation, to explore professional accreditation mechanisms and curriculum development. With a view to enhancing Hong Kong’s reputation as a global education hub, EdUHK reached out to other institutions and governments around the world. This included a visit to Kazakhstan to discuss initiatives such as a platform to enhance the professional capacity of teachers in higher education and promoting educational research. The International Outreach Study Programme also resumed, following a hiatus due to the pandemic, with postgraduate students attending various universities in Australia and Canada, to take part in seminars and workshops, and interact with scholars, researchers and peers from different countries. 香港教育大學 2023-2024 年報 23 With a special focus on research and knowledge transfer to enable EdUHK’s scholars to exchange ideas and increase their impact, links were established with institutions in the Greater Bay Area, mainland China, Belt and Road countries and beyond. For instance, the University established the Centre for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Development Research with Sun Yat Sen University, joined an alliance of institutions in Shandong, Hong Kong, and Macao to collaborate in higher education and research development, and established a research network with University College London’s Institute of Education. Consequently, we signed a cooperation agreement with The Civil Aid Service (CAS). As a result, the University will hold regular seminars and workshops for CAS members and cadets regarding physical and mental health, and CAS will organise experiential learning activities for EdUHK students to improve their fitness, discipline, leadership skills, cooperation and teamwork, emergency response capability and resilience.
