Chairman’s Foreword 校董會主席前言 The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2021-2022 4 Almost two years into my chairmanship of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), I am truly impressed by the many important developments at the University. Thanks to the strong commitment and collective effort of the management and faculty, 2021-22 was a fruitful year, during which EdUHK made significant contributions to the realm of learning and teaching with innovation, as well as advancing research and knowledge transfer. The University community also spared no effort in supporting the local school sector in overcoming the challenges during the prolonged pandemic, through knowledge-based initiatives and community service. Strategic planning While recognising our achievements in the past year, we must remain focused on our strategic goals and long-term development, in line with our core mission. We are two-thirds into our 10-year Strategic Plan, which is the roadmap formulated right after retitling in 2016 to chart the way forward for the new-born university. I am delighted to report that we have already achieved or surpassed most of the key strategic goals on different fronts with three years remaining. However, there is no room for complacency, especially in the face of the ever-changing educational landscape and evolving societal needs. It is against this backdrop that the Council conducted a progress review of the Strategic Plan during the recent summer retreat. My gratitude goes to all those who shared their views and ideas, which are being crystallised into new strategic priorities and initiatives to take the University to new heights. Moving forward, preparations are being made to commence the next planning cycle with a view to formulating the University’s strategic goals and priorities into the next decade. Preparing educators This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). With the inauguration of our Tai Po campus in 1997, we have grown and thrived together with the HKSAR. Taking pride in our rich heritage in teacher education, we have nurtured generations of educators and professionals for schools and society, standing out among our peers with our distinct role in teacher education and related disciplines. Our core mission has remained unchanged amidst the passage of time. Teaching is a profession that requires more than mere subject knowledge and pedagogical skills. Teachers are change agents and role models, who have a life-changing impact on the next generations. Character building is therefore as important as knowledge acquisition for both pre-service and in-service teachers. This calls for passion, positivity and professional ethics, alongside national and global perspectives. It is encouraging to see the diverse experiential learning opportunities made available to EdUHK students, including internships, school placements, language and cultural immersion, and community service, in the rest of the country and other parts of the world. The establishment of the Centre for Chinese Classical Education during the year, in particular, can be of great value in this context. 本人擔承香港教育大學(教大)校董會主席一職將近 兩年,親睹大學多項重要發展,深感欣慰。二零 二一至二二年無疑是豐收之年。感謝大學管理層和 學院人員同心協力,積極投入,讓教大得以創新思 維,在學與教領域屢獻新猷,而在研究與知識轉移 方面更有長足發展。本校學者亦以知識為本,不遺 餘力地藉著社區服務,與本地學界及社會大眾共渡 疫情延宕的難關。 策略發展 除了回顧過去一年的成就與發展,我們亦要秉持核心使 命,專注於策略目標與長遠發展。自二零一六年正名 大學後,教大隨即制定「策略發展計劃」,擬就十年發 展藍圖。如今我們已走過當中三分之二的時光,尚餘三 年,卻已在多個重要策略範疇達標,甚或超額完成。然 而,我們絕不能停步不前,尤其教育格局瞬息萬變,而 社會需求亦日新月異。為此,校董會已於今年夏天舉 行集思會。會上,我們檢視了策略發展計劃的進展。在 此,我特別感謝所有積極分享意見和觀點的成員。他們 的真知灼見,將會凝匯成教大未來的策略發展重點和新 舉措,令本校得以更上層樓。展望未來,我們現已著手 準備下一個規劃周期,以期制定大學未來十年的策略目 標和優先發展事項。 裝備教師 今年是香港特別行政區回歸二十五周年,而教大大埔校 園亦自一九九七年開始啟用,正好與特區同步成長。教 大建基於源遠流長的師道承傳,為學界、為社會培育一 代接一代的教師及專業人士,在教師教育及相關領域享 有獨特角色,在本地大學中別樹一幟。時光荏苒,滄海 桑田,我們的核心使命始終不變。 教師專業不僅講求學科知識和教學法,更重視身教言 教,以生命影響生命,因此建立品格與增進知識,同樣 重要。準教師及現職教師都需要充滿熱誠、正面樂觀, 兼具師德、家國情懷和國際視野。近年,教大同學已 有相當豐富而多元的體驗學習機會,包括實習、學校體 驗、語言及文化沉浸,以及社會服務等,足跡遍及全 國,以至全球。教大並於年內成立國學中心,意義尤其 深遠。 Chairman’s Foreword 校董會主席前言
