Chairman’s Foreword 校董會主席前言 The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2021-2022 4 Almost two years into my chairmanship of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), I am truly impressed by the many important developments at the University. Thanks to the strong commitment and collective effort of the management and faculty, 2021-22 was a fruitful year, during which EdUHK made significant contributions to the realm of learning and teaching with innovation, as well as advancing research and knowledge transfer. The University community also spared no effort in supporting the local school sector in overcoming the challenges during the prolonged pandemic, through knowledge-based initiatives and community service. Strategic planning While recognising our achievements in the past year, we must remain focused on our strategic goals and long-term development, in line with our core mission. We are two-thirds into our 10-year Strategic Plan, which is the roadmap formulated right after retitling in 2016 to chart the way forward for the new-born university. I am delighted to report that we have already achieved or surpassed most of the key strategic goals on different fronts with three years remaining. However, there is no room for complacency, especially in the face of the ever-changing educational landscape and evolving societal needs. It is against this backdrop that the Council conducted a progress review of the Strategic Plan during the recent summer retreat. My gratitude goes to all those who shared their views and ideas, which are being crystallised into new strategic priorities and initiatives to take the University to new heights. Moving forward, preparations are being made to commence the next planning cycle with a view to formulating the University’s strategic goals and priorities into the next decade. Preparing educators This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). With the inauguration of our Tai Po campus in 1997, we have grown and thrived together with the HKSAR. Taking pride in our rich heritage in teacher education, we have nurtured generations of educators and professionals for schools and society, standing out among our peers with our distinct role in teacher education and related disciplines. Our core mission has remained unchanged amidst the passage of time. Teaching is a profession that requires more than mere subject knowledge and pedagogical skills. Teachers are change agents and role models, who have a life-changing impact on the next generations. Character building is therefore as important as knowledge acquisition for both pre-service and in-service teachers. This calls for passion, positivity and professional ethics, alongside national and global perspectives. It is encouraging to see the diverse experiential learning opportunities made available to EdUHK students, including internships, school placements, language and cultural immersion, and community service, in the rest of the country and other parts of the world. The establishment of the Centre for Chinese Classical Education during the year, in particular, can be of great value in this context. 本人擔承香港教育大學(教大)校董會主席一職將近 兩年,親睹大學多項重要發展,深感欣慰。二零 二一至二二年無疑是豐收之年。感謝大學管理層和 學院人員同心協力,積極投入,讓教大得以創新思 維,在學與教領域屢獻新猷,而在研究與知識轉移 方面更有長足發展。本校學者亦以知識為本,不遺 餘力地藉著社區服務,與本地學界及社會大眾共渡 疫情延宕的難關。 策略發展 除了回顧過去一年的成就與發展,我們亦要秉持核心使 命,專注於策略目標與長遠發展。自二零一六年正名 大學後,教大隨即制定「策略發展計劃」,擬就十年發 展藍圖。如今我們已走過當中三分之二的時光,尚餘三 年,卻已在多個重要策略範疇達標,甚或超額完成。然 而,我們絕不能停步不前,尤其教育格局瞬息萬變,而 社會需求亦日新月異。為此,校董會已於今年夏天舉 行集思會。會上,我們檢視了策略發展計劃的進展。在 此,我特別感謝所有積極分享意見和觀點的成員。他們 的真知灼見,將會凝匯成教大未來的策略發展重點和新 舉措,令本校得以更上層樓。展望未來,我們現已著手 準備下一個規劃周期,以期制定大學未來十年的策略目 標和優先發展事項。 裝備教師 今年是香港特別行政區回歸二十五周年,而教大大埔校 園亦自一九九七年開始啟用,正好與特區同步成長。教 大建基於源遠流長的師道承傳,為學界、為社會培育一 代接一代的教師及專業人士,在教師教育及相關領域享 有獨特角色,在本地大學中別樹一幟。時光荏苒,滄海 桑田,我們的核心使命始終不變。 教師專業不僅講求學科知識和教學法,更重視身教言 教,以生命影響生命,因此建立品格與增進知識,同樣 重要。準教師及現職教師都需要充滿熱誠、正面樂觀, 兼具師德、家國情懷和國際視野。近年,教大同學已 有相當豐富而多元的體驗學習機會,包括實習、學校體 驗、語言及文化沉浸,以及社會服務等,足跡遍及全 國,以至全球。教大並於年內成立國學中心,意義尤其 深遠。 Chairman’s Foreword 校董會主席前言
Chairman’s Foreword 校董會主席前言 香港教育大學 2021-2022 年報 5 Serving schools and society Capitalising on our traditional strengths, I believe we can make an even greater contribution to the advancement of teacher education academically and professionally, transcending boundaries. I am especially pleased with the University’s latest initiatives in local curriculum development and pedagogical innovation, national partnerships and regional knowledge transfer, among others. All along, EdUHK scholars have developed a strong knowledge base in school and teacher education, which has benefitted teachers, students and parents alike. Their scholarly output and advocacy have been widely cited in public discourse on education policy and related topics. I look forward to seeing the more extensive use and application of our expertise for different purposes, especially through thought leadership in policy deliberation and formulation, as well as paradigm shifts in education. Vote of thanks Much to our regret, President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung has decided not to seek reappointment upon the completion of his current term next year. On behalf of the Council, I wish to thank Professor Cheung for his exemplary leadership in the significant transformation and impressive growth of the University. I am pleased that Professor John Lee Chi-kin has been appointed the next President starting from September 2023. As a renowned education scholar of high international standing, I have every confidence that Professor John Lee Chi-kin will lead EdUHK in its next phase of development. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the outgoing Deputy Council Chairman Mr Dieter Yih, and Members Ms Sylvia Chan, Mr Tony Choi, Mr Li Chin-wa, Mr Glenn Fok, Professor Mark Mason, Professor Enboa Wu and Mr Yeung Yat-ming for their wise counsel and dedicated service to the Council. In essence, it leverages and synergises our academic strengths and professional expertise to create a multidisciplinary learning environment for faculty and students to interact across disciplines and broaden their horizons. Since I have decided to pass the torch upon the completion of my decade-long tenure next year, it seems an opportune time to review and reflect upon what the University community has accomplished together. Time has flown by so quickly. The great joy and excitement in celebration of the retitling of the then Institute to The Education University of Hong Kong in 2016 is still fresh in my memory. We have certainly come a long way from being a mono-technical institute to an education-focused university with multidisciplinary strengths and robust research capacity. Among the many strides made, we have expanded our programme offerings at different levels, enhanced research and knowledge transfer, extended academic footprint, raised our profile regionally and globally, as well as excelling in educational innovation. 這是本人任內第九份年度報告。不經不覺,我接任校長將 近十年。由於我已決定在明年任期屆滿後交棒,容我藉此 機會,與大家一同回顧教大過去多年的發展與成就。 日轉星移,歲月匆匆,二零一六年教大上下聚首一堂,慶 祝正名的一刻,依然歷歷在目。回想我們由最初的單一學 科院校,一步一步發展成為專注教師教育及提供相關多元 學科的大學,而研究實力更日見雄厚。多年來,教大不斷 邁步向前,擴闊本科及研究院課程、加強研究和知識轉移、 拓展學術足跡、提升我們在區域和全球的地位,並在教育 創新方面表現卓著。 President’s Overview 校長的話
President’s Overview 校長的話 香港教育大學 2021-2022 年報 7 EdUHK is committed to promoting computational thinking education through different school projects and curriculum development 透過不同的學校項目及課程發展,教大積極推動運算思維教育 academic vibrancy has led to the launch of an array of programmes in different disciplines, such as AI literacy, sports science and coaching, and environmental sustainability. Our overall research capacity has also seen significant growth, in terms of funding, quality of output and research impact. We have expanded the scope of research to cover new areas, including big data analytics, psychology and neuroscience, as well as earth and physical sciences. We will continue to strengthen our multidisciplinary capacity, develop new strategic areas, and improve teaching and research facilities, in line with the Education-plus approach. Core mission As the largest provider of future educators and social leaders, the University has remained steadfast to its unique mission in teacher education, especially through ongoing enhancements to the quality of learning and teaching. I am pleased with the implementation of the new common core curriculum and graduate attributes for all undergraduate students, who are provided with more opportunities to unleash their potential, enrich their knowledge, and grow professionally. Of equal importance is their ethical responsibility to the wider community. This means that more emphasis is placed on positive values, teaching ethics and commitment to their profession. Our students are also equipped with the necessary Information and Communications Technology competence, in addition to an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset. President’s Overview 校長的話 The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2021-2022 8 Cambodian university teachers pursuing doctoral degrees at EdUHK as part of a World Bank project 來自柬埔寨的大學教師獲世界銀行資助,在教大修讀博士課程 International standing I ampleased to note that, for eight consecutive years, EdUHK has been ranked among the top three in Asia and the top 20 in the world in education, according to the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings. We made great strides in the latest Research Assessment Exercise conducted by the University Grants Committee (UGC), with an increasing proportion of our research output judged as “World Leading” or “Internationally Excellent”. Our scholars are also among the Top 2%Most-cited Scientists in a list compiled by Stanford University. Over the years, we have extended our global footprint by forging partnerships with over 200 universities and institutions in 39 different countries and places in the formof faculty and student exchange, joint research and dual degree programme offerings. Our sustained partnerships with the World Bank, UNESCO, UNESCO-UNEVOC and other international organisations have been translated into impactful projects in teacher education, green skills training and promotion of peace. It has been particularly encouraging to witness the launch of twoWorld Bank-funded projects to build higher-education capacity in Vietnamand Cambodia. This year, we welcomed the first batch of Cambodian university teachers to our Doctor of Education programme, who will serve as key personnel to drive quality enhancement in higher education in their home country. Bridging gaps Locally, we are concerned about the widening learning gap between students from different social strata, which has become even more acute since the pandemic outbreak. Among the hardest hit groups are the underprivileged and students with special educational needs. President’s Overview 校長的話 香港教育大學 2021-2022 年報 9 教大一直積極裝備學生,迎向未來,讓他們在數碼世代 中保持競爭力和社會流動性。二零一六年正名後不久, 教大已開始在課程發展及教師培訓方面,引進運算思維 及科學、科技、工程和數學教育,以期把學生由單純的 科技消費者,變成科技應用和解難者。這方面的工作已 漸見成果。目前,逾三分一本地小學在校內教授編程, 教育局亦計劃於全港小學採用及參考本校設計的課程。 知識轉移及創新 本校於二零一六年成立知識轉移辦公室,於本地以至全 球促進和推動教大學者的學術成果。自二零一八年起, 教大已取得逾七十個享譽國際的創新獎項。為培養學生 和畢業生的創業精神,我們已培訓近一百支創業團隊, 當中更有二十支隊伍獲得資助。部分教大創新發明已授 權業界使用,涵蓋教育科技、教育學習玩具和醫療科技 等。然而,我們不會只停留於起步階段,正籌劃更多新 舉措,善用科技,結合教育。 teaching and self-learning. These efforts have been well received, in terms of the number of beneficiaries and impact. The animated series on Chinese historical figures from different eras, for example, has so far received an accumulated viewership of over eight million, reaching local, overseas Chinese and non-Chinese speaking students. Another animated series on Chinese language and culture learning has been viewed around two million times, over a three-year period. We have also advocated the importance of equipping students to be future ready, in the face of the digital era, to enhance their competitiveness and enable social mobility. In 2016, shortly after retitling, the University sowed the seeds of computational thinking and STEM into curriculum development and teacher training to empower students to move beyond mere technology consumption into problem-solving. This has borne fruit with over a third of local primary schools now teaching coding, and I am pleased to learn of the Education Bureau’s plan to adopt and adapt our curricular materials in all primary schools. Knowledge transfer and innovation Also in 2016, the Knowledge Transfer Sub-office was established to facilitate and drive the dissemination of our expertise, locally and globally. This has culminated into over 70 prestigious international innovation awards since 2018. To incubate and nurture an entrepreneurial spirit in students and graduates, we have trained nearly 100 start-up teams, 20 of which have been funded. Some of our innovations, covering education technology, education toys and healthcare technology, have been licensed. This is only the beginning, with more initiatives in the pipeline to better integrate technology into education.

President’s Overview 校長的話 香港教育大學 2021-2022 年報 11 Sense of gratitude On a personal note, I would say that my tenure has been most fulfilling and rewarding. It has been my privilege to have worked and lived on this beautiful campus for the past nine years or so. The morning walk, evening swim and encounters with colleagues and students will be part of my fond memory. As President, I feel that nothing is more gratifying than seeing students excel and graduate with confidence and preparedness. My entire academic career has been in the higher education sector, but I was new to the world of teacher education when I took the helm at the then Institute, back in 2013. Nurturing teachers today helps shape the world of tomorrow. I am fortunate to have met so many passionate educators and professionals who have generously afforded me their counsel and insight. I take pride in having played a role in the journey towards attaining the university title and the contributions made by the University to the school sector and the wider community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank very warmly all stakeholders and friends of the University for their unfailing support and encouragement amidst the challenges along the way. Finally, my best wishes go to my successor Professor John Lee Chi-kin, a committed educator and highly respected scholar with whom I have worked closely for almost a decade. Learning and Teaching 學與教 The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2021-2022 14 學科多元 過去十年,教大秉持「教育為本.超越教育」的策略, 透過擴大學術領域,拓闊知識基礎,致力提升教師教育 及相關領域之學術發展。為此,本校持續發展多元學科 課程及專業,以回應社會和教育方面的不斷轉變。在如 此背景下,本校籌辦了九個全新榮譽學士學位課程,涉 及人工智能及教育科技、運動科學及教練和環境管理等 範疇。這些新課程由大學教育資助委員會(教資會)資 助,於二零二二至二三學年開展,旨在於傳統教育領域 外,為新興專業培育未來人才,當中包括多個高年級入 學學士學位課程,涵蓋幼兒與家庭研習、英語研究及數 碼傳訊、文化遺產教育與藝術管理、行政管理、社會創 業與發展研究,以及社會學與社區研究。 Diversifying programme offerings ‘Education-plus’ is a strategic approach adopted by the University over the past decade to enhance teacher education and related disciplines by building upon our expanding academic scope and knowledge base. This has been made possible through the continuous development of multidisciplinary programmes and specialisations, in response to evolving societal and educational needs. It was against this backdrop that we made preparations for nine new undergraduate programmes on AI and educational technology, sports science and coaching, and environmental management, among other disciplines. Funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC) for launch in the 2022-23 academic year, these programmes have been designed to nurture future talent in emerging sectors and professions beyond the traditional ambit of education. Among them are senior-year entry programmes with specialisations in early childhood and family studies, English studies and digital communication, heritage education and arts management, executive management, social entrepreneurship and development studies, as well as sociology and community studies. The objective is to enrich their learning across multiple disciplines through a series of training and workshops and encourage them to apply their knowledge in professional authentic settings, such as start-ups, NGOs, publishers, media outlets and public organisations. Students are also assigned to community and business leaders who serve as mentors. Future Classrooms drive pedagogical innovation 「未來教室」推動教學法創新 The Future Classroom project entered a new stage, with tailored tours organised for over 160 principals and frontline teachers from 47 schools. Learning and Teaching 學與教 The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2021-2022 16 Broad-based knowledge for prospective teachers Regarding teacher education, there are ongoing efforts to review and enhance the existing BEd curriculum, in tandem with the changing demands of the school sector. This is done through the introduction of new courses or enrichment of the current curriculum in the form of formal and non-formal learning. One example is an optional three-level course on AI literacy – the first such initiative in Hong Kong. Apart from all undergraduate students at EdUHK, the course has been offered to education students from the University of Lapland in Finland. It starts with information about important concepts in machine learning and deep learning, followed by the completion of individual AI projects. In the next phase, the connection between AI and prospective societal development will be explored. As such, a cross-unit team was formed to plan and implement an experiential learning course on the subject. An integrated curriculum approach has been adopted and incorporated into different domains of university studies, including the mandatory General Education Foundation Course. Students of teacher education programmes, in particular, are required to take core courses to strengthen their national security knowledge before school placement. Regarding the Basic Law, a resource platform was launched in December 2021 to facilitate students’ preparations for the Basic Law test. During the year, over 2,400 students attended related talks and workshops, as well as accessing the online platform to enhance knowledge of the Basic Law and national security education. Travel far and wide Following the easing of pandemic-related travel restrictions, the University gradually resumed outbound and inbound exchange activities in 2021-22. Over 60 EdUHK students went to our partner universities in the mainland, Japan, the United States, and a number of European countries for semester-long exchange programmes, and 54 exchange students from different parts of the world joined the EdUHK family for studies and cultural immersion. Learning and Teaching 學與教 香港教育大學 2021-2022 年報 19 Students of the dual master’s degree programme offered by EdUHK in collaboration with Jeonbuk National University, on academic exchange in South Korea 教大與南韓的國立全北大學攜手推出雙學位碩士課程,學生到當地進行學術交流 Postgraduate education Building upon our strengths in teacher education, EdUHK has offered 28 postgraduate degree programmes, from taught master’s to research degrees, to cater for diverse learning needs related to education. Internationalisation is part of the University’s postgraduate education strategy. During the year, a dual Master’s Degree programme was offered together with Jeonbuk National University in South Korea. This was in addition to six dual programmes already launched with universities in France, Germany, Japan, United Arab Emirates and Taiwan. The number of applications for our taught postgraduate programmes recorded significant growth of 63% year-on-year in 2022. Highly employable graduates Our education graduates are highly sought-after in the school sector. According to the 2021 Graduate Employment Survey, 96.5% of our BEd graduates were employed or had chosen to further studies within three months of graduation, with an average monthly salary of HK$31,383. During the year, efforts were made to identify niche research areas, develop new and emerging disciplines and further strengthen EdUHK’s multidisciplinary research capacity. Research and Knowledge Transfer 研究與知識轉移 The Education University of Hong Kong Annual Report 2021-2022 22 Fuelling the growth of research capacity The expansion of our research and knowledge transfer activities in recent years has laid a solid foundation for the University to venture into emerging disciplines apart from education. This is evidenced by our thriving, high-quality research output in the non-education disciplines in the University Grants Committee’s latest Research Assessment Exercise. To further this momentum, the University identified environmental sustainability, big data analytics, psychology and neuroscience, life and career development, and sports science and coaching as its new focus areas for research during the year. Plans are afoot to set up new university research facilities for human behavioural neuroscience, design thinking and robotics, and digital humanities on the existing campus. The new Academic Building, which is expected to be operational in 2025-26, will provide additional laboratories and workspace to strengthen our research capacity, in line with the ‘Education-plus’ approach. In terms of capacity-building, the University launched a new internal funding scheme in November 2021, with a view to supporting multidisciplinary research projects in niche areas, namely the social network’s impact on school education, promoting environmental health, an education model for children with special educational needs, and life and career development across the life span in the next few years. The funding is for EdUHK researchers to generate pilot data, support applications for larger-scale external research grants, and create a dataset to produce high-quality paper publications.
