Ms Piya Muqit appointed as Visiting Fellow in the Department of Asian and Policy Studies

February 2021

The Year of the Ox begins with a bang in APS. We are thrilled to have Ms Piya Muqit, a well-known human rights lawyer and advocate, appointed as Visiting Fellow in our Department. During her time with the Department, Ms Muqit will be working closely with us in establishing a pilot Policy Clinic, first of its kind amongst universities in Hong Kong to combine law and policy in training policy and social sciences students, a common feature in top U.S. Law and Policy Schools but unprecedented in Hong Kong.

Ms Piya Muqit is a trained international expert on child rights, human rights and policy issues. She has received her legal training in criminal and public law and called to Bar in 2001. She was trained at the prestigious Doughty Street Chambers and Garden Court Chambers. She has an LLM in Human Rights Law jointly from LSE and SOAS and a Masters in Child Studies from King’s College London. She was the Head of Policy in Unicef UK and Executive Director of Justice Centre Hong Kong. Currently, she is a Co-Founder and Co-Director of CivicSight, a U.S. registered NGO, housed in the Leitner Centre for International Law and Justice, a think-and-do tank under Fordham Law School, our Department’s MOU partner.

During her time with the department, Ms Muqit will also be giving talks, organise workshops and seminars, and liaise with overseas universities for collaborative research projects.

With her impressive track record in policy work, Ms Muqit is a formidable addition to our Department to continue our mission on internationalization and global networking. Through Ms Muqit, we are also connected to the renowned think-and-do tank Leitner Center for International Law and Justice in Fordham Law School.

Welcome to the team, Piya!
