Dr. Alex He Jingwei Comments on Reforming Hong Kong’s Hospital Authority
Sing Tao Daily publishes Dr Alex He’s commentary on recent controversies surrounding Hong Kong’s Hospital Authority (HA). While pointing out the room for improving Hong Kong’s health governance, he argues that dissolving this institution as suggested by some legislators is not a good idea. The mechanical problems emerged from the operation of HA should be addressed by continuous fine-tuning. In particular, Dr He stresses that more proactive use of demand-side subsidies to encourage the utilization of private facilities will not only reduce the heavy pressure on public medical facilities and thus helping reduce long waiting time, but also contribute to the government’s long-term agenda in poverty alleviation and social protection.
