Asia-Pacific Forum on Science Learning and Teaching, Volume 2, Issue 2

PREFACE

    Since two of our International Advisers - Prof. Huanan Liang and Mr. Anthony K.H. Tong have retired, it is our honours to have Prof. Chao-Ti Hsiung (Normal Taipei Teachers' College) and Mr. Chee-kuen Yip (Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Science Museum) accepted our invitation to join us as new inernational advisers.  Besides, Dr. Jingling Liu who is the Head of the Environmental Science Department, Northeast Normal University becomes another Guest Editor of our Editorial Board.
   
    In the Second Issue of Volume Two, we are very glad to have our new International Adviser, Mr. Chee-kuen YIP to write for our Foreword section an article in both Chinese and English on the primary science activities based on the ancient Chinese astronomy exhibition held at the Hong Kong Science Museum. In the Academic Articles section, we got four research papers on a wide and popular areas of science education, to wit  "assessment of interdisciplinary tasks" (by May CHENG and Winnie SO), "effective science teaching and learning in Australia" (by Russell TYTLER), "scientific literacy for student teachers (Winnie SO and May CHENG) and "enhancing  science teachers' creativity" (by Vivian CHENG). Apart from those peer-reviewed research papers, we have four pieces of general articles written by some science educators, school teachers, or  educational researchers. They are related to the "group work implementation in Hong Kong" (by Simmi TAM), "group work in science learning" (by Teresa WONG), " scientific investigation as a creative teaching method in primary education" (by Alex TSE) and "the environmental education in China" (by Jingling LIU and Eric TSANG). Besides, there is one set of multimedia resources on "making apparatus for demonstrating breathing mechanism and smoking process" (edited by Man-tak CHAN) which contains 36 pieces of video clips (with different resolution quality) available for downloading.  Files of all those articles are available for retrieval in the Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf) and furthermore there are the Simplified Chinese version (in GB coding) for all Chinese articles.

    Finally, we would like to express our sincere thanks to Prof. Philip Adey (King's College London), Prof. Agnes Shook Cheong Chang (Nanyang Technological University), Prof. Chao-Ti Hsiung (Normal Taipei Teachers' College), Prof. John Loughran (Monash University) and Dr. Mun Ling Lo (HKIEd) for providing the critical peer-review of those research papers. Besides, I am very grateful to Dr. Chi Sum Man (Green Power), Mr. Yuen Tan Lau (Education Department, HKSAR) and all members of our Editorial Board who help me in reviewing and polishing all other contributed articles.  Thanks are also due to all those who have contributed articles in this issue and to all research assistants and colleagues in the HKIEd Science Department who offered their help in developing and promoting this online periodical.  Apart from the sponsors highlighted in the previous two issues, additional financial support from the School of Foundations in Education of HKIEd  is gratefully acknowledged.
