Throughout November, the Joseph Lau Luen Hung Charitable Trust Asia Pacific Centre for Leadership and Change (APCLC) was honoured to host Prof Francis L. Huang, a Professor in the Statistics, Measurement, and Evaluation in Education program within the Department of Educational, School, and Counselling Psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA.
During his visit, Prof Huang delivered two insightful seminars co-hosted by the APCLC and the Department of Education Policy and Leadership for the EdUHK community.
The first session, held on 14 November 2025, was a face-to-face seminar titled "Instrument (scale) development considerations: A case study of the Authoritative School Climate Survey (ASCS)". Prof Huang outlined the development and testing of the Authoritative School Climate Survey (ASCS), discussing practical aspects of large-scale survey development, design, and administration. He also delved into statistical analyses such as multilevel exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, alongside topics on reliability, validity, and invariance testing. The seminar attracted 25 participants.
The second session, a hybrid event on 27 November 2025, was titled "(More) misconceptions on multilevel models". This presentation addressed several persistent myths surrounding the application of Multilevel Modeling (MLM) in education and psychology. Prof Huang clearly explained the fallacies and provided practical, actionable approaches to help researchers use the technique appropriately in their own research. The event successfully engaged 30 online and on-campus participants.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Prof Huang for his invaluable contributions and for sharing his profound expertise during his visit. We look forward to future collaborations.
