APCLC Research Fellow Dr. Dora Ho won General Research Fund (GRF) of HK$685,329, funded by Research Grants Council, the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The research grant is for a 36-month study entitled "Understanding the Practices of Middle Leadership for Quality in Early Childhood Education: Role, Power and Authority”. The study aims to:

  (1)
Reconceptualize the existing theories and practices of middle leadership and develop alternative models by comparing propositions emerging from the findings of this project with those from the Western literature;
  (2)
Document the research process of the study to allow the transfer of methods, concepts, knowledge and practices across disciplinary borders in the research community;
  (3)
Understand the role, power and authority of middle leaders as perceived by the research participants (i.e. principals, vice principals, senior teachers/curriculum coordinators, key stage coordinators and teachers) in ECE in HK;
  (4)
Identify organizational factors that promote and impede the practice of middle leadership for quality improvement initiatives in local preschool settings; and
  (5)
Generate systematic, research-based knowledge through the longitudinal qualitative study and large-scale territory-wide quantitative study that can be used by the research community for future research, policymakers for policy refinement, and ECE practitioners for professional practice advancement.
