Venue: D4-G-01, Tai Po Campus, EdUHK
Registration / Enquiries: Tel: 2948 8476 or ayfchan@eduhk.hk (Mr. Aaron Chan)

About the Seminar:
Several studies (Bennett, Woods, Wise, & Newton, 2007; Busher, 2005a, Busher & Harris, 2000) have highlighted the importance of middle leaders for learning, representing the force that moves a school for change and improvement (Heng & Marsh, 2009). Although the contemporary literature offers data about the nature, practice and influence of middle leaders (Harris & Jones, 2017) and the relevance of a shared vision for task consistency within schools (Elmore, 2010); the available evidence has been mainly descriptive and frequently from case studies. In fact, there is little empirical research of the effects of middle leadership practices on the academic achievement of students in different subjects (Sammons, Thomas, and Mortimore, 1997; Highfield, 2014). This presentation will give a brief account of the Chilean educational system and an ongoing non-experimental correlational / explanatory study that aims at evaluating the effect of middle leadership practices over academic achievements in Language and Mathematics of Chilean secondary students when mediated by the alignment of pedagogical practices inside a subject department.
