The increasing occurrence of chronic and complex diseases is placing increasing demands on hospitals, and causing healthcare costs to escalate. To address this problem, most Western countries have adopted primary healthcare systems. Based on their experience, primary healthcare decreases the overall healthcare cost to society by building a healthier population, decentralizing healthcare resources and empowering individuals to manage and improve their own health.
A primary healthcare system is the most economically feasible and efficient approach to providing healthcare to a population with increasingly complex and chronic diseases. The keystone to such a system is education, both to individuals and to the community. Those professionals in our community poised to deliver this education precisely where it is needed are school teachers, social workers and nurses. Thus, training teachers, school social workers, nurses and promising health educators to provide health education is critical to establishing and developing an effective health care system in Hong Kong.
This top-up degree programme builds on the foundations of prior training students have acquired in their certificate / diploma studies. It aims to prepare nurses to train-the-trainer and to conduct health education to patient / clients in hospital and community settings. It is also aimed at school teachers, school social workers who work closely with the students to provide basic health education and help youth resist the various attractions; as well as promising health educators for effective health education in various settings.

This top-up degree programme requires students to complete 20 courses (each representing 3 credit points, for a total of 60 cps). Courses will comprise academic core courses, academic electives, honours project and health education practicum in a specified distribution.
This course is to facilitate the development of students' skills and give students experience in doing research. Students will be expected to work in groups under the supervision of their supervisors. Students will be required to submit progress reports, participate in seminars and present their research results in oral and written formats.
This course is to give students a chance to develop their knowledge and skills in their particular area of interest. Students will design and implement health education programmes in selected settings. They will work in groups under the supervision of supervisors. They will participate in seminars and present their health education programmes in oral and written formats.

Prospective and commencing students with Associate Degrees or Higher Diplomas in health or health related studies may be required to take three preparatory Additional Compulsory Courses (ACC), namely (i) HealthCare Ethics; (ii) Health Service in Hong Kong; and (iii) Human Biology, in order to assist them in meeting pre-requisites for the programme entry. Students who are required to take the ACC will have to complete a total of 69 cps in order to fulfill the graduation requirement of the programme (i.e. 60 cps for the programme and 9 cps for the ACC).
The programme may be completed in two-year full-time or three-year part-time. Classes of the programme will be scheduled between 8:30am and 9:20pm on Mondays to Saturdays with possible scheduling of combined classes for programmes / courses of different modes of study (including full-time and part-time).
The medium of instruction is English. Chinese / Putonghua will be used as the medium of instruction for some courses as appropriate.
Applicants who have successfully completed the relevant Professional Development Programmes offered by the University will be granted credit transfer from the relevant courses in the programme on a case-by-case basis.
Graduates of this Programme will be awarded a Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) degree. This top-up degree will not enable a graduate to become a practicing nurse, a registered teacher or social worker in Hong Kong. However, graduates of the programme will have a wide range of employment opportunities, and will be able to compete for high-level positions. They will be qualified to work as health promotion officers in elderly centers, community health educators, wellness coordinators in outpatient departments / clinics, and so on.
Graduates may also wish to pursue further studies in nursing, sports, public health, education, therapy, social work or other related disciplines offered by local universities. At EdUHK, they will have the opportunity to do postgraduate study through a variety of Master's programmes. The University also offers Doctor of Education programme and PhD programme for doctoral study in the relevant specialties.
In 2017, 98.5% of our graduates successfully secured a job or pursued further studies.
