The increasing occurrence of chronic and complex diseases is placing increasing demands on hospitals, and causing healthcare costs to escalate. To address this problem, most Western countries have adopted primary healthcare systems. Based on their experience, primary healthcare decreases the overall healthcare cost to society by building a healthier population, decentralizing healthcare resources and empowering individuals to manage and improve their own health.

A primary healthcare system is the most economically feasible and efficient approach to providing healthcare to a population with increasingly complex and chronic diseases. The keystone to such a system is education, both to individuals and to the community. Those professionals in our community poised to deliver this education precisely where it is needed are school teachers, social workers and nurses. Thus, training teachers, school social workers, nurses and promising health educators to provide health education is critical to establishing and developing an effective health care system in Hong Kong.

Programme Aims

This is a degree completion programme which builds on the foundations of prior learning students have acquired in their Associate Degree / Higher Diploma in health/health-related studies. The programme aims to prepare nurses as train-the-trainer and knowledge skills to conduct health education to patient / clients in hospital and community settings. The programme also aims to prepare school teachers and school social workers to work closely with students in the provision of basic health education and behaviours to resist various attractions or health compromising behaviours. The programme promises to prepare health educators for effective health education in various settings.

On completion of the programme, graduates should be able to:

  1. integrate knowledge, theory and practice in providing health education in various train-the-trainer programmes in school and healthcare settings for a variety of clients including school children, teenagers, adults and patients in the community;
  2. implement evidence-based health education practice;
  3. diagnose health education problems, plan health education strategies, implement health education plans with patients; motivate patients to comply with health education, and evaluate outcomes;
  4. evaluate contemporary health issues in healthcare; and
  5. perceive and adapt to changes in the healthcare field in the global society; and in clients across the life course. Graduates should be able to think in innovative, creative ways to optimize health in civil society.

Programme Structure

This top-up degree programme requires students to complete 20 courses (each representing 3 credit points, for a total of 60 cps). Courses will comprise academic core courses, academic electives, honours project and health education practicum in a specified distribution.

Honours Project (6 cps)

This course is to facilitate the development of students' skills and give students experience in doing research. Students will be expected to work in groups under the supervision of their supervisors. Students will be required to submit progress reports, participate in seminars and present their research results in oral and written formats.

Health Education Practice (6 cps)

This course is to give students a chance to develop their knowledge and skills in their particular area of interest. Students will design and implement health education programmes in selected settings. They will work in groups under the supervision of supervisors. They will participate in seminars and present their health education programmes in oral and written formats.

Curriculum Framework

Additional Compulsory Courses (bridging courses)

Prospective and commencing students with Associate Degrees in health or health related studies may be required to take three preparatory Additional Compulsory Courses (ACC), namely (i) HealthCare Ethics; (ii) Health Service in Hong Kong; and (iii) Human Biology, in order to assist them in meeting pre-requisites for the programme entry. Students who are required to take the ACC will have to complete a total of 69 cps in order to fulfill the graduation requirement of the programme (i.e. 60 cps for the programme and 9 cps for the ACC).

Duration and Mode of Study

The programme may be completed in two-year full-time or three-year part-time. Classes of the programme will be scheduled between 8:30am and 9:20pm on Mondays to Saturdays with possible scheduling of combined classes for programmes / courses of different modes of study (including full-time and part-time).

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction is English. Chinese will be used as the medium of instruction for course(s) as appropriate.

Credit Transfer

Applicants who have successfully completed the relevant Professional Development Programmes offered by the University will be granted credit transfer from the relevant courses in the programme on a case-by-case basis.

Academic Recognition and Career Prospects

Graduates of this Programme will be awarded a Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) degree. This top-up degree will not enable a graduate to become a practicing nurse, a registered teacher or social worker in Hong Kong. However, graduates of the programme will have a wide range of employment opportunities, and will be able to compete for high-level positions. They will be qualified to work as health promotion officers in elderly centers, community health educators, wellness coordinators in outpatient departments / clinics, and so on.

Graduates may also wish to pursue further studies in nursing, sports, public health, education, therapy, social work or other related disciplines offered by local universities. At EdUHK, they will have the opportunity to do postgraduate study through a variety of Master's programmes. The University also offers Doctor of Education programme and PhD programme for doctoral study in the relevant specialties.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants should:

  • have obtained a Higher Diploma or Associate Degree in health/health-related disciplines or equivalent; or
  • be registered teachers in kindergartens, primary, secondary or special schools; registered social workers; or registered nurse / enrolled nurse obtained a Higher Diploma; or
  • have obtained a Certificate in Education, Certificate of the Teachers of Children with Special Educational Needs or equivalent; and
  • be fluent in both written and spoken English.
