本課程的基礎理論( Doninger, etal. 1993 ; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984 ; Boekaerts, 1996 ; Sandler, Braver & Gensheimer, 2000 ),建基於兒童與各式各樣的其他人在不同的情境和場合中經常的接觸。這些人包括他們的家人、老師、朋友、鄰居等。他們與這些人的關係好壞,和他們如何處理困難及壓力,都會影響其自我形象,以及與別人相處時的感受。如何處理這些問題,又會影響他們面對生命中不同情況的應對能力,引發不同的情感。換句話說,兒童的精神健康,關鍵在於「應對」- 如何處理不同的情況,並且幫助和支持其他人。
本課程的焦點在於教導兒童應對技巧,同時鼓勵他們以助人為本。因此,比比和朋友 的中心理念:幫助別人、尊重別人、關注別人的感受(同理心)和與別人合作。
課程進行期間,兒童重複地學習多種應對的技巧,學習如何協助別人和向別人尋求幫助。他們從而掌握應對轉變和處理困難的方法。
