Using Big Data and Small Data to Improve Your Teaching: Tests, Essays, Discussions, and Class activities

2018-06-19

Prof. Chiu Ming Ming, the Chair Professor of Analytics and Diversity in the Department of Special Education and Counselling, gave a keynote speech at the conference “Learning and Teaching @EdUHK Festival 2018: Teaching Excellence in the Big Data Era” on 25th May, 2018. Educators shared innovative learning and teaching approaches, promoted e-Learning and applied technology-enhanced pedagogies.

In his talk “Using Big Data and Small Data to Improve Your Teaching: Tests, Essays, Discussions, and Class activities,” Prof. Chiu showed how good assessment powers Big Data analyses in education. For example, sorting a table of student scores on each question on a test by both student/row and test question/column identifies the highest vs. lowest scoring students, easiest vs. hardest questions, and oddities (e.g., lucky guesses), which can inform teaching (e.g., review especially hard question's content) and improve large-scale testing.
