PROGRAMME AIMS

This programme provides a solid subject-based grounding for practitioners in the music profession while at the same time satisfies their need in further developing understanding in thinking, research and practice in music education relevant to their professional roles. In particular, the programme aims to deepen and strengthen students' professional aptitude in their chosen music domain such as composition, performance, or research; cultivate synergy between subject and pedagogical strengths in music; and help students develop and apply skills in creative and critical thinking, research and arts practice to the professional fields of music and music education.

By the end of the programme, participants should:
  • Apply new pedagogic approaches to promote musical development;
  • Integrate diverse historical, social-political, cultural, philosophical and aesthetic understandings of music;
  • Carry out research and critical analysis on issues related to contemporary music education;
  • Demonstrate understanding of global perspectives as they relate to the development of knowledge and skills across different musical pursuits; and
  • Create and express music via performance, research, composition, or practice-based projects.



PROGRAMME STRUCTURE*

This one-year full-time or 2-year part-time Masters programme requires 8 courses – 24 credit points (cps) to complete, of which 3 courses are compulsory (core) and 5 courses are free choice (electives). It is operated in a flexible blended mode of study in which courses are conducted with a mix of face-to-face contact, e-learning and directed self-learning. Courses take place mostly in the evenings and at different specific times either at Tai Po Campus or down-town venues.

MA(ME) classes (except MUS5221) are scheduled in the evening of weekday for both full-time and part-time modes of study. Participants are expected to graduate with the stipulated period of study.

MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION

The medium of instruction is English.


ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should normally hold a recognized Bachelor's degree or equivalent with music as either major or minor subject. Shortlisted applicants may be required to attend an interview.

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution in a non-English speaking system should normally fulfill one of the following minimum English proficiency requirements which may be subject to adjustment:
  • IELTS 6.0; or a TOEFL score of 80 (internet-based test) The results of IELTS/TOEFL are considered valid for two years and should be taken in test centres (tests taken online such as IELTS indicator/IELTS Online and TOEFL Home Editions are NOT accepted) ; or
  • Grade C or above in GCSE / GCE OL English ; or
  • Band 6 in the Chinese Mainland's College English Test (CET) (a total score of no lower than of 430 or above and the test result should be valid within two years)
  • Other equivalent qualifications.

Notes: Holders of degrees from most Hong Kong tertiary institutions are exempted from this requirement.

ARTICULATION TO EdUHK'S PROGRAMMES

  • This programme with a strong practical and research focus may provide a continuing academic pathway for graduates from both BA and BEd streams in the music discipline.
  • Graduation with this MA qualification may gain further career advancement in their relevant areas in the cultural and arts industries. They may also pursue further studies at doctoral level such as the EdD, DMA or PhD.
  • Part of this MA(ME) programme will be closely interfaced and articulated with EdUHK's PGDE programme to offer a possible QTS pathway for those in need of such a qualification.
  • Possible overseas articulation and joint degree arrangement within the programme in the near future will mean multiple graduation pathways for those who are interested in pursuing further studies overseas.


MELBOURNE COLLABORATION
(Double Degree Option with MCM, Melbourne University, Australia)


To qualify for selection in this exchange, potential applicants must be current MA(ME) students or graduates, and:
  • Demonstrate a high musical performance standard (equivalent of Trinity College London LTCL level); have completed at least 12 cps (4 courses) either within the first semester or during the first two semesters of their MA(ME) study; and
  • Have completed at least 12 cps (4 courses) either within the first semester or during the first two semesters of their MA(ME) study; and
  • Possess a good English standard (e.g., IELTS 6.5 or above); and.
  • Passed a music proficiency audition.

Successful applicants will be given ‘Advanced Standing’ status by MCM to enroll in its MM(PerfTeach) programme exempted from first semester requirements. They will have to bear all financial and personal responsibilities pertaining to their studies in Australia; while their student status at EdUHK will be temporarily ‘suspended’. Upon their completion of the MM(PerfTeach) Degree in Melbourne, outstanding MAME credits (12cps) could be recognized (on application) for full EdUHK MAME graduation status through credit transfer.
