Granting of Self-Accrediting Status : a milestone for HKIEd

Special New! Granting of Self-Accrediting Status: A Milestone for HKIEd

The Institute enters a significant new stage in its development with the granting of self-accrediting status. The Government's decision, announced on 24 March 2004, follows the recommendation of the University Grants Committee (UGC) after conducting an Institutional Review in October 2003. The review was requested by the HKIEd when overwhelmingly positive comments on our internal quality assurance mechanisms were received in the report of the Teaching and Learning Quality Process Reviews (TLQPR) conducted by UGC in 2002.

With the new status, we now have the authority to approve new programmes and change existing programmes internally instead of having to rely on the help of external accreditation agencies. The upgraded status will bring enhanced flexibility in meeting community needs and in responding to changing education policies. It will also help us attract quality students.

" The Government's decision is a testimony to the maturity and sophistication of the quality of the teaching and learning activities of the HKIEd.

We are delighted with the outcome which recognises the successful upgrading of the Institute. It should be regarded as an exemplary accomplishment in view of the short history of the Institute spanning only ten years.

It is also a reflection of the commitment of the staff and the success of our graduates in schools.

As a tertiary institution with self-accrediting status, we will now be able to respond quickly and flexibly to the needs of the community, and can save resources which would otherwise be spent on external accreditation.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all colleagues and students for their commitment and professionalism which made this result possible.

I would also like to acknowledge and thank both the UGC and the Government for their ongoing support for the upgrading of the Institute.
