What can adults do with school bullying?

2018-03-23

Why do people bully others? What are the consequences of being bullied? Can we do anything about school bullying?

Dr. Chiaki Konishi, of McGill University, Canada, came to EdUHK to answer these very questions.

Her research has found that stressful life events are associated with bullying behaviors, but that such associations are moderated by family support—stressed youths are less likely to bully others if they receive high levels support from their families.

Moreover, her research found that the level of bullying in school is related to the school's performance in exams; the worse the performance, the more bullying. Yet this effect is moderated when students have close relationships with their teachers.

Good parent-child relationships prevent youth from bullying others in the face of stress, and good teacher-student relationships protect youth from the negative impact of being bullied in school.

As the academic exchange between McGill University illustrates, we strive to raise the standard and impact of everything we do – whether it is searching for more creative ways to support student learning, making research more visible and socially meaningful, or caring for our colleagues and the broader community.  By allowing our staff the freedom to focus on their work we seek to raise what we do to the NEXT LEVEL.
