EPL's Prof Christine Halse delivered a keynote speech in the International Educational Frontiers Conference’s at the Ateneo Salt Institute in the Philippines.
Prof Halse emphasized that globalization has brought about huge disparities in wealth, “with some experiencing great poverty, and others being ‘crazy rich Asians’.”
She explained that intercultural education could help to alleviate these inequalities, as it encourages people to share and celebrate their cultures.
Prof Halse explained two important factors in the promotion of intercultural education:
1. the school leadership must believe in the importance of this type of education. Unless school leaders champion intercultural education, it will not take off.
2. teachers must be professionally equipped to teach and facilitate intercultural education among students.
