Free Audio Editing Software

All four free audio editing software reviewed here are excellent. The best is still Audacity, for being cross-platform and supporting multiple languages and formats. For a better user experience and functionality, WavePad is an excellent choice. For portability, Wavosau is really handy. And for quick editing of recorded voice audio, mp3DirectCut is a real time-saver.

Remark Audacity first appeared back in 1999, and is still being developed, so it's no surprise that the program comes packed with features. It is considered the best Open Source audio software.

Remark This may be a free edition of a commercial software, yet it is jammed packed with features. The interface is far more intuitive and professional than Audacity, and there is a nice task manager on the right panel to get jobs done quickly.

Description Wavosaur is a tiny program (768KB), yet it is amazingly powerful, despite its small size. It can open all the usual file formats; displays the usual waveform view of your file; can trim, cut, copy or paste wherever you like; and has plenty of useful effects (fade in and out, normalize, remove vocals, tweak volume, auto trim, a silence remover and more). Expert users will appreciate extras like the ASIO and VST effect plugin support. And while the interface is a little dated, it's easy to use. (screenshot)

Description mp3DirectCut is a tiny dedicated MP3 editor and recorder that allows you to cut, copy, paste or adjust volume without re-encoding (which means there's no loss in sound quality). Using Cue sheets, pause detection or Auto cue you can easily divide long files. (screenshot)

Remark Tiny program, fairly easy to use.
Excellent tool for slicing up audio recordings, such as interviews, into segments using auto pause detection. Or, use it as a multi-take voice recorder. Real time-saver.
