ASIAN ENGLISHES AND ENGLISH AS A LINGUA FRANCA IN ASIA
Module Synopsis
單元概要
This course develops students’ critical ability to question the notion of standards and norms in the context of the development of Asian varieties of English and the major role being played by English as a lingua franca in the Asian region. The course will provide a historical overview to the development of Asian varieties of English, investigate and illustrate variation across different varieties of English, and review possible reasons for this variation. Why and how certain variants have become established as standards will be critically considered. The course will also debate the usefulness of describing varieties of English according to national and/or geographical location, and the potential implications of the role of English as a lingua franca, particularly in the Asian region.
