HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE |
Module Synopsis 單元概要 |
This course locates the historical development of English in a larger context of how the world’s languages are grouped. It will examine both the English language’s development from its Germanic and Romance roots into the standard norm-providing varieties that would currently be internationally recognizable today whilst also looking at the emergence of more recent localized forms. The course will also give students a grasp of the language’s historical, cultural and geographical background with a view to enabling them to understand why English has borrowed lexis directly from Latin, Greek and a large number of the world’s other languages. Thus the course will also develop students’ ability to recognize the origin of a subset of English words in their mental lexicon. |
