University Writing 

  1. Course Synopsis 

This course prepares first-year students to meet requirements of academic written assignments at the tertiary level. Students will acquire academic English writing skills needed in the preparation for university assignments, such as synthesizing academic sources, paraphrasing ideas, evaluating arguments, and applying technical conventions in academic writing. While writing skills form the focus of the course, they are not taught in isolation. Reading, listening, and speaking activities are integrated for thematic and contextualized discussion. 

 

 

  1. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) 

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 

CILO1 

 

Demonstrate the ability to paraphrase and integrate academic sources into one’s writing. 

CILO2 

 

Demonstrate the ability to express a balanced view on issues/topics in academic writing. 

CILO3 

 

Apply knowledge of language register to observe an objective tone in academic writing.  

CILO4 

 

Apply knowledge of academic conventions in writing to observe standards of academic integrity.
