@Students are required to obtain IELTS 6 or above in each component namely Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

#Students are required to obtain IELTS 5 or above in each component namely Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

*Students are required to obtain IELTS 6.5 or above in each component namely Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

**Students are NOT subject to the minimum IELTS score requirement for each component of IELTS. In addition, the following tests will be accepted as an alternative as having met the LER for English:

  1. An attainment of Level 3 or above in all four areas (Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing) in Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (English) obtained in a single sitting or multiple sittings;
  2. An attainment of a test score of 95 or above in Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test; or
  3. Other possible alternatives may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Note 1: Students who are admitted to the full-time undergraduate programmes with a normal study period of two years or below (e.g. students who are admitted into Year-3 of 4-year programmes) will be exempted from the language enhancement courses and LERs.

Note 2: LERs under the Language Policy are not a graduation requirement.  However, some Language-major programmes have specific graduation requirements on language proficiency.  Please refer to your programme handbook for further details.

Note 3: Full-time undergraduate students admitted before 2021/22 may take IELTS during their penultimate and final-year of studies, while UGC-funded full-time undergraduate non-English-major students admitted in 2021/22 and thereafter are advised to follow the advice of the Centre for Language in Education (CLE) and take IELTS upon completion of the fourth English enhancement courses offered by the CLE.

Note 4: Students who are admitted to the full-time undergraduate programmes with a normal study period of two years or below (e.g. students who are admitted into Year-3 of 4-year programmes) will be exempted from the language enhancement courses and LERs. The LERs stated for this programme are for reference only, in case students would like to apply for the EdUHK-sponsored IELTS/PSC. It would be optional for these students (i.e. senior year entrants with LERs exemption) from UGC-funded programme to participate in the IELTS and/or PSC as well as to apply for the one-off sponsorship provided by the University. These senior-year entrants who apply for the sponsorship would be required to complete the fee-paying supplementary language enhancement courses if their IELTS and/or PSC scores fall below the requisite level (i.e. LERs for English and/or Putonghua, as shown in http://www.eduhk.hk/cle/en/University/LERs). If their IELTS and/or PSC scores meet the requisite level (i.e. LERs for English and/or Putonghua), there will not be any consequences when they apply for the sponsorship. For more details about EdUHK-sponsored IELTS/PSC, please refer to http://www.eduhk.hk/cle/en/University/Reimbursement.
