A Clientele Study on Primary School Teachers |
This study aims at investigating the perceptions of the schools on all recent graduates and the perceived needs the no beginning primary school teachers. The graduates include those graduated in the last two years in CE(P) (2 yr FT), CE(P) (3 yr FT), ICTT(P) (2 yr FT), ICTT(P) (3 yr PT) and TCSEN courses. |

An Intra-cultural Comparative Study of Citizenship Education in Chinese Context: A Preparatory Study |
This project aims to examine the status of civic education in the curriculum and the relative emphasis on the school's responsibility in the socializing process in relation to other institutions or socialization agencies in the society, to investigate the views of front-line practitioners and school administrators on civic education, in respect to belief, goals and practices as well as concern, and to study the extent to which students have the opportunity to learn about various topics important in civic education. Research questions in relation to civic education program and teaching in school include: What is the status of citizenship education as an explicit goal for schools? How does the way in which schools are organized to influence students' civic education? What are the priorities within formal education programmes that attempt to provide preparation for citizenship? How do teachers view civic education? How do teacher deal with citizenship in their teaching? What is the influence of different types of pedagogy and classroom practices in civic education? How well does the education of teachers prepare them to deal with the different facets of civic education? |

Citizenship Education Policy Study II: A Study of Preservice Teachers of Civic Education |
CEPS II is a follow-up research project to the Citizenship Education Policy Study (CEPS). Building upon instrumentation developed from the previous research, it is a comparative study of the conception of citizenship education among student teachers of civic education (or related subjects) involving researchers in nine international locations. At HKIEd the sample included all the first year students taking the civic education elective in both the English and Chinese-medium Secondary Certificate of Education course, plus a parallel group of students at Northeast Normal University in China. The study utilized a combination of a survey with a subset of interviews. |

Creative Teaching of Primary General Studies |
The project was conducted in 5 selected primary schools. Discussion sessions with school teachers were held to introduce the activity being used to teach geographical and historical aspects of Hong Kong in primary General Studies. The strategies in handling different lessons/topics were also discussed. Trial practice on simulating game was carried out in P.4 classes. Pupils found that the game was interesting, creative and useful in the learning of various concepts. |

Environmental Protection Education: The Case of the Application of the Dike-Pond Ecological System in the Xijiang Lowland |
This project will review an important effort to reduce or mitigate environmental damage in the Xijiang riparian lowland by using the dike-pond system (DPS) concept. This environmental damage has direct impact on the Zhujiang Delta closer to the Hong Kong SAR. A remote sensing analysis and field survey of this study has relevance to both environmental protection education in the Hong Kong SAR and to the teaching of environmental studies at the HKIEd. This study is the Phase I of a two-year research project. Findings of this research will be the preparation for Phase II--a book concerning environmental protection and environmental citizenship in both the Hong Kong and China context. |

Final Stage of the Project "Conceptions of Citizenship in Teacher Education, HKSAR and Mainland China Compared at a Time of Transition" |
This exploration is conducted in the interpretive/qualitative paradigm using the case study method. It includes the application of techniques evolved from the grounded theory in extracting themes and sub-themes. It will help to reveal the similarities and differences in conceptions of citizenship between two groups of Social Sciences student teachers, one in HKSAR and another in Guanzhou; and factors in shaping them. It is expected that findings will help orientate civic education curriculum development in the two systems under one country. |

This research project is part of the College and University Affiliation Project that encompasses a three-year exchange between faculty at the University of Minnesota and HKIEd. It includes this baseline study of perceptions of civic and environmental issues among in-service teachers studying civic education (or related subjects) at HKIEd, the University of Minnesota, Zhongshan University, and South China Normal University. This study uses a survey instrument in a purposeful sampling of students at these institutions. |

Implementation of Interdisciplinary Teaching - Its Challenges and Opportunities |
Given the growing popularity of interdisciplinary curriculum as a means to help students face challenges in a omplex, technologically advanced and independent society, teachers' competence on interdisciplinary teaching becomes the concern of the community. This project aims to find out whether the intended aims of General Studies curriculum have been achieved through questionnaires, interviews and observation of lessons. The data gathered provides useful information on how teachers implement the curriculum and hence reflect their competence in interdisciplinary teaching. Impications and suggestions will be discussed in relation to the professional development of practising teachers on interdisciplinary teaching. |

Teaching of Interdisciplinary Themes - Theory into Practice |
This project aims to develop the instructional competence of the pre-service and in-service teachers in the implementation of interdisciplinary curriculum while promoting the partnership between the Institute and schools in the design and delivery of integrated curricula. The General Studies teachers of five participating schools have joined the project. After attending the seminar and workshop on the design and implementation of interdisciplinary curriculum, the teachers and lecturers concerned are now in the process of putting theory into practice by trying out various modes of curriculum integration in school context. The outcomes of this project will include research paper on the changing teacher perceptions towards curriculum integration and the teaching packages for various modes of curriculum integration. |

It is expected that this paper will shed light on the salient features of the Chinese Work-study educational thought and the role it played in the mental enlightenment and social change in Republican China. |
