APCLC Research Fellow Dr. James Ko won General Research Fund (GRF) Grant

APCLC Research Fellow Dr. James Ko won General Research Fund (GRF) of HK$1,369,000, funded by Research Grants Council, the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The research grant is for a 36-month study entitled "Effective Teaching and Their Effects on Early Childhood Development: A Comparative, Longitudinal, Mixed-method Study of Hong Kong and Finnish Kindergartens”. It aims to:

  (1) Examine the relationships between effective teaching and childhood development:
a) Whether children can learn more from teachers with more positive teacher-student interactions;
b) Whether child-led, play-based teaching and teacher-led, academically-focused teaching approaches have different impacts;
c) Whether a dominant type of teaching approach leads to different learning outcomes;
  (2) Examine whether the above relationships change or strengthen over time (follow up over three school years) and whether there are individual differences;
  (3) Understand how school factors and broader contexts affect effective teaching in Finland and Hong Kong; and
  (4) Advance the current practices through extensive result dissemination and professional development workshops.
